You appear to forget that Mikey sold out to @jeffc who sold out a couple of years later to Minor Tom.
Yes..I had forgotten about the intermediary owner

What did they ban you for? I've got to say that wishing them luck is admirable, but not something I could do with these MoFos. Not just because they've banned me purely for suggesting a member sign up on another site, but also we're out of our old home because of them. I kind of see it as going to see Scrooge on Christmas Eve and thanking him for evicting me after he found out I'd told one of my friends there's a new businessman in town. :D

I have no idea what I got banned for. Either joining up here or they deleted my momo and banned me after the request. Who knows.

I'd be surprised if Major Tom was still involved. He had been working with MOMO for several months prior and probably had fulfilled his contractual obligation to them the day of his last post. While I can't tell the last day he signed on to the old site, his last active post was 5/27, the day after that last thread, admonishing the membership on their negative reaction. However, if you still want to contact him, his name is THOMAS GUERVENO and you can at this email address: webmaster@boursematch.com. If you do a search, there are plenty of other ways to get a hold of him as well:

When Tom took over I thought he stated he was one of the creators of Myspace. Am I misremembering here? (I well could be)

I thought he was Tom Anderson.

Googling Tom Anderson I found this (different Tom Anderson)

Different Tom - someone actually asked him that question when he took over the board, but he said indeed it was not him. I think his handling of the ownership of AGF is a pretty good indication of his business accumen.

Thanks Scott. I was pretty sure the link to Myspace was mentioned, but didn't remember the other part. I know part of it is aging and stress, and a good bit I attribute to damage from my systemic mrsa event, coming up on 5 years ago.

I Googled up the Myspace Tom thread. In it as a Welcome to major Tom I posted this image.

Kiss of death. I'm now banned :o

Even though this is AGF's home now, it feels strange to be banned from a place I've been a member of for 11 years just for pointing someone to another site.
Posting over there is now the kiss of death. I'm wracking my brain trying to think of a way to hurt that guy...

If the new owner was inclined to keep things secure he probably doesn't give much of a damn now if our info is collected off. Maybe someone vindictive would invite it :(

As I was reading the introduction of Minor Tom thread from our former home, I saw my buddy Raindog ask then of JeffC a question that was also put to Tom in the current situation - "why didn't you approach the board and see if a member wanted to buy it?"

Do you guys think it sold for enough that they did not think an AGF member could, or would have purchased AGF?

I doubt it. There are members here with significant purchasing power. My guess is that he was approached by MOMO and got sold a bill of goods. Even with the trainwreck we witnessed, Jae or whatever his name is smart enough to still have venture capital backing. It looks like he's been at it for at least a few years, and he obviously has some marketing experience - so i'm sure he was able to make the deal seem too good to pass up for Major Tom. I am only speculating, but the "estimates" that have been posted here suggesting the old AGF was worth in the neighborhood of 30 grand seem very high. If it were you would have seen a lot more mainstream ads in the popups/headers.

I don't know if they sold him a bill of goods or not, but as someone mentioned before there would have been risk associated for him to go the admins or the membership with a potential offer. If Tom had offered the forum to one of us, it (obviously) would have happened before any deal was struck with MOFO. If he had been unable to make a deal with one of us, whoever turned him down (1) would have already looked inside his financials and know exactly to run the site (and what would be necessary to set up a competing site) and (2) would have been able to raise holy hell with the rest of us. Either of those almost certainly would have killed any potential MOFO deal. Once he decided to sell us out, he had to sell us out all the way.

Yes, it's sad - but also nothing we can do to change it. The new forum seems to be working well and a lot of our members have made it over. thanks to the work of many. I'm already looking at the whole thing in the rear view mirror.

Lots of "ifs" and "would haves" in there ;-) Not arguing any of it, but in the grand scheme of things it simply doesn't matter. Deal is done and over with. AKA - nothing we can do about it. We have a great new platform here that was put together in record time by our new admin ( who is taking donations BTW! ), a lot of people put forth a valiant effort to bring people here, and for the most part AGF life is moving forward.

I actually agree and he's probably glad he went the route he did. If the deal leaked to the community ahead of time and people looked into Momo, we could have all acted similarly to the way we did. It probably would not have been quite as severe, but it could easily ruin a sale with a third party. He retained all business leverage by keeping us in the dark.

Either way, now it's owned by an active member of the community and I feel much better about it.
If I had something witty to say, I'd put it here.

If it was just a straight sale of the site, my personal opinion is he could have discreetly approached either mickey or myself, told us he was considering selling for whatever reason and did we think any member or group of members would be interested as he would prefer to turn it over to us than a stranger. I don't think he would have hurt his bargaining power, we've been through two previous sales, nobody bailed and if the current owner had left things as they were as both he and Jeff C did previously, things would have gone on as they always have. People didn't revolt nor did Patrick even consider starting a new site until it was apparent that the MOMO platform was an absolute piece of non-functional garbage. Instead, because he was working with them for months prior to the official transfer, I think Major Tom got some equity or future consideration above what he would have received for a normal sale. MOMO was in the background for over six months before (it shows on the MOMO board that the AGF start date there was in November 2019)...

I wouldn't dispute any of this. There are 50 guys here who knows more about what actually happened than me. I'm just speculating. And I couldn't be happier about how we turned that turdburger into a nice new home.

I'm just saying if I had been his lawyer on the deal, I would have absolutely advised him to leave the members out. There's just no financial upside. It's not very likely the members of a budget guitar enthusiast message board are going to drive a bidding war, so the best case scenario is you get an offer for what you already have in your hand. It's much more likely that by disclosing a possible sale to a member, even if just in confidence to a known champion of the forum like TJ or Mickey, that something goes sideways.

I like to believe that I also would have advised him to not sell to someone who was obviously going to flush it down the toilet. He knew how much it meant to us. It has real, ongoing value. Surely MOFO isn't the only game of this sort in town. Perhaps a buyer with a soul would have paid a comparable price?

But past is prologue, etc... Onwards

I honestly do not think Tom had any idea what this place meant to us.
He was basically an absentee landlord who depended on tobijohn and me to run the place and
was available to do the things we couldn't when need be. He seemed (to me) to be totally gobsmacked by the way
we ALL reacted.

When you tell people to move by force from a beautiful condo they have lived in for years to a burned out chicken coop on the wrong side of town you really should know there will be serious kickback.

I accidentally went to old agf on another computer a little while ago and saw dearlpitts and a few others still posting there as of yesterday. It makes me sad. Wish he could get the message and come over here with the rest of us. Lord knows we have tried.
