Tangy sprouts

I think I've seen more fret sprouting this year than any other year, so that is an aspect to consider here. Having said so, I have never seen this happen before today. I went to play the SX Hawk Stop Tail I bought this year, and found it incredibly (painfully) sprouty. I've already had to file fret ends on half a dozen guitars this year, so I was not surprised by that. But looking at the nature of the sprouts, I've never seen anything like this before! In about 10 places up the high E side of the neck, the fret tangs have sprouted so much they pushed out and deformed the finish! Anyone else ever see these happen? They are pushed pretty far out, and the tang also extends outside the wood in some of them.
This is the guitar we're talking about.
Had that happen on my SX Leo the 1st 1pc neck I had. It was horribly sensitive to humidity. Sold it and bought another and it has been completely stable for whatever reason.
My other rosewood SX necks were very stable. The maple ones have been hit miss. Some sprout like crazy. Some are super stable.

10 years, 2 months, and 8 days of blissful ignorance ruined by that snake in the grass Major Tom.

Yup. I think it's a sign of bargain build compromises. For example, they probably don't kiln dry the wood, so it has unpredictably random moisture content to work out later. And they don't cut the tangs shorter before inserting the frets because that would cost extra labor. And they let the neck varnish also cover the fretboard sides because they don't bother masking off. I probably spent 2 hours filing and sanding and steel-wooling. I can still see most of those spots, but no longer feel them anyway.honyock wrote: ↑Wed Jan 04, 2023 3:03 pm Had that happen on my SX Leo the 1st 1pc neck I had.
