Can anybody tell me what's the difference between an electric drill and an impact driver?
Drill = just rotary motion
Impact Driver adds a (mild) hammering action.
Our house here is all concrete walls, inside and out. Just to hang a picture that hammer function is a necessity !

I did end up reading this online. Plus they said an impact driver is better for when you need more torque.

Easy to find a drill that does both, specialized Impact drivers are usually quite powerful and not really for homeowner needs unless you are drilling massize holes in your driveway or thru outside concrete structures. My Hyundai hammer drill has a switch to turn on the impact/hammer function and alsi lets you dial in the strength level needed, not expensive and I've used it on both interior walls to install wall anchors to hang guitars and also to drill silver dollar sized holes in concrete flower planters outside..works great...but a tip...lots of dust...so better to have a vacuum running when you drill masonry of can get someone to do it while you drill. Another option I've used inside is to tape an envelope or plastic bag under the area being drilled and that catches 75% of the dust drilled out.

I scooped up a 1935? Kalamazoo KG-11 acoustic guitar. The dating is approximate at the moment based on its construction and intel on the inter webs. It has a FON factory order number, but the stamp is almost faded beyond recognition. Almost! Photography is helping to pull out what’s hidden.

It needs some love which it’s been getting slowly as I rehydrate the woods from years in an attic. The tuners are missing and I am keeping an eye open for the right type (waverly bent tab Tuners that were made only in the 1930s. I’ve seen them but I really don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for something that’s been used on numerous guitars from expensive to cheap. It may eventually get a neck reset but I’m not in a rush to put it under the knife. As
It is, it looks to be very playable up to the 7th fret or more. Image

Been eyeing these for a while. Since the Gibson lawsuit with Dean, I asked the wife what she thought about buying me a guitar for our 30th wedding anniv., coming in Oct.

Dean V79.
Really nice out of the box, except:
Had some budget import guitar quality control issues: horribly cut nut / strings so out of tune high, yikes, dead spot on bridge vol pot, and a little blemish on the side of the headstock. I turned the G string saddle around to see if I would be able to intonate it, or I was going to return it.
I broke the brittle saddle screw reverse star retaining washer in the process.

I contacted the Reverb seller, got a little refund for the blemish, and they contacted Dean to send me a vol pot (all 250k pots here, but it sounds fine - plenty of treble available), and a couple of those washers. They sent me a pot and a new bridge.
I touched up the blemish with a Sharpie.

I got the nut slots sorted and this guitar sounds great and plays really well. Fret ends are smooth, level is not bad but I did a fret level anyway.
Balances well; no neck dive.
The front strap button was mounted too high up the neck heel; the strap interfered with my hand, so I moved it.
No, I dont care about the hole.

Picked up another Harley Benton Dullahan, courtesy of GC Used...had a GC rewards certificate so ended up grabbing it for less than $250 which is a good $155 or so off the new shipped price.

Not sure if this color will look like this in person, have a feeling it'll be closer to daphne blue (but we'll see!). Also will be curious to see the back of the neck here, sometimes these are incredibly figured.

One thing I don't like about the design is the knobs, though - they're really hard to see on a dark stage. So I got some nice bright mini chickenheads. Note that you really need to get the mini chickenheads if you want to do this: regular size chickenheads will fit, but then they interfere with each other at certain positions.

Not really "gear acquisition", but this was the closest match. Something recently made me try out drive stacking, and apparently the Rat and Tube Screamer are a well-known pair. I've got an EHX East River Drive, and I've discovered that I really like pushing the Rat with the ERD. The trick is to keep volume and drive pretty low on both of them, generally not more than 11 o'clock or so. What I like about the result isn't even exactly the tone so much as what you might call the "response" - it feels very "hot" without feeling "high-gain" exactly, very responsive and dynamic, very feedbacky in a good way, feels like the volume is really high even if it isn't.

I also tried them in the other order, but that did not work as well; it starts to sound a bit farty, almost bitcrusher-like if I push it too far.

Anyway it was well worth the Labor day specials I took advantage of and got it to my door for $216.

Shipping is the killer for 1 or 2 small items. Try tubedepot.com. Prices have gone up.

Edit: Almost forgot, saw some Psvane 12ax7 on Ali express, price wasn't bad but i don't know how the reviews were. You are probably gonna pay close to $20 now for 1 tube. Just looked, closer to $25-30.

Just ordered a Zoom H2n portable recorder. Handy sized.
Should be good for collecting idea snippets, recording practices, getting sounds from odd places.....woods, rivers, bathrooms, etc.
Has 5 mic directional combinations to record from. Supposedly sounds quite good for a cheapish unit.
Recording is a one button push once internal settings have been saved.
Has a small speaker but an out put for headphones or external speakers, which I have in a fine small zip-case speaker set. Good for louder playback.
Gets 15-20 hrs on 2x AA batts, or can run off b-mini adapter cable.
I got a mic holder adapter as well so it'll fit on a shorty desktop mic stand I have. 139$...plus bells/whistles.

Can you describe "noisy"? Hum? Hiss? Crackling?

Does it make the noise with a basic clean tone, or just when cranked?

It is hissing'cracklin sound but one of the 12AX7 tubes is gassy has that tell tell blue color going on about like the Northern Lights and I believe thats the problem. I found a good place to buy tubes and ordered a few I have a Blackstar Dept 10 Dual Drive in my pedalboard and it uses a 12AX7 as well.

'Blue' glow is normal and always present. Refraction in individual tube types determine if your eye will see it or not. A leaky tube (gassy) gets a white 'ash' which are contaminants which burn up and stick to the flashing (silver stuff at the top or sides of the tube). It looks like a fine snow. These types of leaks are microscopic (typically around the pins) and normally end with them suddenly breaching and the tube completely blowing up, going all white and sometimes glass cracking.

Other sources of hiss and crackling which are more common than tubes:
- Dirty, loose or fractured solder joint for the tube socket. Wiggle the tube in the socket with the amp in play mode, to diagnose. It will get better and worse if this is a socket problem.
- Plate resistors going bad (arching inside the resistor). Sounds lie Rice Crispies in milk, with a breathy hiss over top.
- For tube amps with surface-mount components: poor solder joint.
- Broken volume pot or pot solder joint. Very common for a pot to take a straight-on hit, which puts a hair fracture on the resistive plate inside the pot. Similar, the ground solder joint breaks and you are getting more signal than per the design. Definite crackle, some hiss but also wild fluctuations in volume.
- Failing output tubes. This is typically a lot of hum with hiss. It is more common for output tubes (EL84) to be faulty out of the gate, than preamp tubes (12AX7). However, JJ and Suhgang both went through a period that they experienced high failure rates with their preamp tubes.

Not very exciting, but splurged for an upgrade.
Sweetwater Black Cyber something deal, Polytune 3.
Big upgrade over the Donner tuner pedal, but the Donner served me well for 5+ years, and still works fine.
