I saw this little bit of insanity yesterday. The guitar is a Charvel DS1 Pro Stock, which were made for a short time about ten years ago. When they came out they took some flack from traditional Charvel fans because:

1) They bucked the superstrat trend of the moniker.
2) They were made in China.

I happen to know a secret though, and that is that they're very good guitars. I know this for a fact because I own the gold top version of this same guitar. They're mahogany, with neck though body construction, Seymour Duncan pickups (JB & 59), locking tuners, unfinished necks, and a 25.5" scale length. They're a unique instrument that looks like a Les Paul and a PRS had a baby, but they actually play more like a hardtail Jackson soloist.

So yesterday I see this blue DS1 for sale priced at $299. This is at a place where I know I could walk out the door for even less, probably around $250. But there was a problem, and that was it looked weirdly modified. From a distance I thought it was some kind of aftermarket trem tailpiece. But once I had the guitar in my hands I could see that it was some crudely cut piece of bent metal.

Seriously, who does this type of thing to a nice guitar? What does an import tailpiece cost anyways?

Here's a bonus pic. Look what was hanging a couple spaces over.

looks like a piece of old storm window trim, refurbished. Way to recycle. Gotta respect that.

Probably makes no difference to playability and tone, and it would be quick and easy to fix.

My guess would be meth. Lot of that around here, hence all the good pawnshop hunting.

Speaking of bad decisions people on drugs make . . . there was another guitar hanging in that shop yesterday to the far left of the Charvel and Agile. Wished I had taken a picture, but I was too disgusted. Actually it was a bass, an Epiphone Les Paul Bass priced at $99. Sounds like a good deal, doesn't it? Only problem was the frets were removed and the slots filled in with something, most likely Bondo by the rust color of the stuff.
