What Guitar Do You Want... Just Because?

For me it's been quite the opposite. I played a lot of acoustic in my twenties, had several of them, and also 12 string and so on....but the older I get the heavier stuff I seem to like both to play and listen to. Don't really even touch the acoustics but rarely any more.

But, maybe it changes again when I'm past 60 or whatever.

Yeah, that guitar has held a bit of attraction for me too, but everyone says it's as heavy as a load of bricks, and that's a definite deal-breaker for me.

Prince did play the Madcat quite a bit. I was told that it was the first guitar he ever owned, but years later I heard that the one he plays on stage is actually a replica of his first guitar.

He sure could play the f*@k out of it though... I watch this video several times a year... I love how he casually strolls out on stage, plays a solo that melts everyone's faces, then throws his guitar up to God.

When I was younger, all I wanted to play was bass. I didn't start playing guitar until I was about 30, and then it was strictly acoustic for about 10 years. I wasn't even interested in playing electric guitar... But that eventually changed. Now I own 11 electrics and only one acoustic... and 8 basses.

That video, the one that i posted and this one are what I call the Holy Prince Trinity. When my granddaughter gets a little older and asks me why I think that Prince was so great, I'll play these three videos for her. If she doesn't get it, then I can't explain.

I always found it interesting that Prince seemed to move more towards being a guitar player in his later years. He seemed to really improve too (though he could have been simply showing us more of what he had).

The best description I read of the solo in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was "Prince just dunked on everyone." His looks back at Dhani are pretty special too.

And I want a Tele -- Prinze or no -- just because I feel like I should have one. I'd probably go the Jay Turser route on that.

I don't have a 80 but I do have a TE-52 Vintage Series and it's a great guitar plays good sounds good needs a bit of attention to lower the strings at the bridge a bit it's not bad from the factory but it's going up for sale because of the weight. Like I said it's a great guitar but like you said @Mossman it's heavy as a load of bricks so I never play it.

Yikes! That's a little more than my last AL weighed! My general rule of thumb is to stay away from any guitar made of Ash that doesn't have the word "Swamp" in front of it. If it's a thinline, it'll probably be ok, but if it's solid, it'll probably be a boat anchor.

Speaking of Ash and "just because" guitars, I found myself on Rondo gawking at this number again, after reading the $600 Harm thread. I think this is what you should get, @redman. It's Swamp Ash, and Kurt claims it weighs 8 lbs. I don't usually pay attention the the weights on the Rondo website, but 8 lbs sounds about right to me for a Swamp Ash guitar. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on this (when it's available, that is) for years, but for some reason I never have.

And for some reason I bounce back and forth every year or 2. Some of it depends on projects I'm working on with others but other times I'm just forced to switch from something inside.

I had the douglas thinline burl top. Really a very sweet guitar but I sold it. Not because it was too heavy. Probably between 9.5 and 10 lbs iirc, but because it was too way heavy for a thinline. It just ruined the concept of a thinline for me and at that weight it was virtually nothing acoustically. I shudder to think what the solid weighed.

Well that's Swamp Ash according to Rondo... But at 9 lbs., that sounds more like regular Ash. Typically the Ash bodies I see weigh 6 to 6.5 lbs. Sometimes as high as 7 lbs. The neck, and all the other parts add 3-4 lbs, depending on the type of guitar and parts involved.

Didn't the burl-top Douglas thinline have a Mahogany body? That can be as heavy as Ash, or heavier.

But $3500 is way too much for a guitar IMHO.

So I'm building a 28" scale guitar that looks nothing like what I've pictured here. Of course.

OT but that sounds heavy for a body. I aim to get my entire guitars to ~ 6 lbs.

Almost all of mine weigh just a hair over 3kg ie about 6lb 10oz. Usually that requires swapping metal tuner knobs to plastic ones etc.to achieve.

Oh lord, how do you live? If I were that particular about weight I wouldn't own any guitars.

Seriously, though, my maximum guitar weight is about 9lbs... I do consider that "heavy" but not intolerably so. I played bass before I played guitar, so I'm accustomed to heavy instruments (and before that, I played the accordion!). I can tolerate a heavy bass more than I can tolerate a heavy guitar, though, which is probably because the weight of a bass is distributed over a wider area. A heavy guitar just feels like a rock hanging from my neck.

Oh man, I already went my rounds with the Rickenbacker 12-string (mine was a 330 with a "Fireglo" finish). But that wasn't a "just because" guitar. That (and all the Rics that owned), was an object of seething, passionate desire - fueled by hero worship and utter, blind ignorance.

You can have 'em... all of 'em!

Actually, I wouldn't mind a 660/12, since they're all made with the wider (Tom Petty spec) neck now. The necks on the rest of their 12-strings are too narrow for me.

It would have to be a used one too... I've already given John Hall more money than I should have.

I'm building a baritone thinline Strat. I chose to make it a Strat because I didn't think a Tele body would balance well with the longer neck, but I see a lot of Tele-style baritones out there, so maybe I was mistaken about that.
