Dad is home! for now! got a tube sticking out of him filling up a bag of nasty gack draining out of his liver. But he's home!
I commence work on projects and stop feeling sorry for myself. Actually have a few customs on the go, in the queue.
This one is probably the nuttiest of all of them, probably the most intense leather carving/tooling job I've taken on yet.
Sunflower!
All carved in, basic shapes etc....
Hours and hours of bevelling, tooling, decorative slashes. Three sabbath albums, one Priest, one Def Leppard to be exact.
So much tappety tap, my hand was cramping up so I hadda quit!
some light diluted applications of yellow dye, green dye, brown dye, and some resist
coats on the petals and shrubberies to protect them from the next dye level.
Now to get that annoying Glen Cambell happy whistling song outta my dang head and into yours!
You're Welcome!

This morning I was thinking to myself what would it take to make a tooled leather tele guard? In-between loads of laundry (yes I have been somewhat domesticated) I pounded this out.
Was some trouble but not enough to make me wonder if I should offer custom p/g services. I need to diversify a little bit.

Sundays are pretty good days for sunflowerin', I reckon
As planned, an application of saddle tan dye helped blend everything, then the antiquing process grabbed ahold of all the nooks and crannies.
I do see several places where I should have been more accurate with the resist coat, and a few other things I'd like to "have back."
Going to have to be more careful in that regard. It's real hard when there's so much going on, just need to take my time more. Makes a fella realize he's still at the "improving beginner" level of this leatherwork stuff.
But, I am pleased and it has a crazy "out behind the barn" kinda country vibe
gonna let this dry for today, then tonight before bed oil it, which will darken thing just a little bit. Tomorrow I be able to lock all the dye down, with a couple of coats of "locker-downer," then continue with the padding, lining sewing etc. on Tuesday.

Ooopsies . . .
Hello AGF. Been still dealing with life stuff, and making the odd strap once in awhile.
Like this one called Crazy Diamond
I think maybe soon one with Chocol, too. Before him in the queue, we have project dragonfly,
just started today. This one is going to take a few more.
Most carving done, will work on beveling tomorrow.

LOL! I have a guy over in France who purchased not one, but TWO different Les paul customs to match a pair straps of mine he bought. Crazy fugger.
Crazy Diamond was a custom order, but could be made again, in various colour combos etc. would have to order more cowboy buttons, but they aren't bad in price. The round ones come in all colours, but the square ones might be hard to find, they were salvaged from an old cowboy shirt.

Stalled on dragonfly, waiting for art materials. In the meantime I had a custom tribute job waiting in the wings on subject matter that admittedly has been 98% off my personal musical radar. Similarly, a couple of years ago, it's kind of how I was introduced to the Black Sabbath catalog, and I am grateful for the opportunity to explore a body of work foreign to me, in this case a monumentally sized one, I'll bet the largest assembled catalog of any particular band in history, including the bootlegs etc. This project is for a somewhat respected AGF brobrah, who apparently covets meandering stoned music that seems to go on and on and on without direction or, much like how my life seems to be working right now.... this classic band boasts not so much a fanbase but more a cult of followers, and a whole culture built around that alternate world, deservingly so.
Been listening to them quite a lot while crafting this... only seemed right I use the chance to learn more via an internet radio station dedicated to them that features selected concert recordings. Quite a lot of stoned noodling, some brutal vocals sometimes, but when they do manage to hit a groove, it is a special kind musical magic. So far I'm seeing them generally as one of those "kinda had to be there" sort of bands. This morning I also received some curated selections that are WAY better than what I've been sorting through already, showing significantly more musicality - so THANK YOU for that, sir!
Band worked a long time, since '65-95, surviving members still seem to get together from time to time. They boast a rich and deep catalog of representative iconography which is makes it fun for me. Here a very light yellow dye to take the vegtan leather from pink to this slightly warmer tone now I am resist coating these dancing bears, and the dye-painted coloured bits before I move in with another base coat of dyes, which will keep them a nice golden brown, and preserve the multi-coloured collars.
Though somewhat familiar to my eyes, a week ago, I had no idea at all what the below "logo" graphic represented. Now, I've learned about the Steal Your Face logo, and the "He's Gone" song the band famously dedicated to a former manager. The goal was to keep the STF logo colours muted, so I used dye that was highly diluted then resist coated it. There is also legend and various meaning interpreted behind how many points are on the lightning bold. Far out, man!
This morning I bursted the edges very carefully, with increasingly darker hand-mixed dyes... and this is where I decided I was done and quit before oiling it. Will oil it one more time then once that sets in for a few hours I will clearcoat it to preserve it where it is mostly, then use antiqueing paste wit some nice dark gunk to highlight the border tooling along the edges, decorated cut marks etc. It also will darken it all just a tad, help blend everything together and give this strap a more 'lived-in' feel. If you recognize the Sienna burst strat here, you may be able to guess who's asked me to make this

needless to say, Terrapin Station is one of my favorite albums.
It looks like I could use a little lotion though.
ME TOO!!!!
Since I decided on a Dead themed strap, I also decided to depart from my normal Strat mods and midboost install and make this one more like an Alligator but with a stock look externally (for now at least). Tonight’s project is to build and install the StratoBlaster so it will have the balls to drive a Mutron/Microton and also push the front end of a Twin Reverb into the juicy distortion Jerry had in his pre-pedal era.
Jerry modded the crap out of everything so you'll be fine doing what you want. Even if it was fueled by weed and heroin, it had passion for his art. I feel that guitar and strap, that is going to be a sweet rig.Chocol8 wrote: ↑Thu May 20, 2021 7:01 pmME TOO!!!!

And we both know @TVvoodoo is the man to do it. The quality of work! But @TVvoodoo embracing the journey. Brad went into bonus territory as far as I'm concerned.
Brad, one thing that is hard to explain for me but however much I like Grateful Dead, I always find it better as a shared experience, if that makes sense. Heck Mrs10T doesn't love them, but she enjoys watching me love them.
Yet again outstanding Brad! Love it!
Got that metallic gold paste wax in the mail, and went after the dragonfly wings. Then I clearcoated, the wings were really bright metallic gold which was kind of silly to me. Thankfully the next step of antiquing paste dulled them down just a bit as well as bringing out the tooling textures and cuts in the wings and the leather. The antiquing paste effect is also apparent on the Steal Your Face strap now also! Brother Chocol8 also asked me to paint some white on the skull part. I'm just now waiting for the paint to dry, as I also some more on a swaggerin' inset skeleton element on the very back of the strap. We are getting close to padding out and lining both of these over the weekend. Lots and lots more pics and deets on f-book, at least of the dragonfly anyway. Haven't put more up of Steal yet. maybe later tonight.

Last pics on the dragonfly strap... it's headed to florida. Now moving on to complete the Grateful Dead project
Project: Anisoptera - the Dragonfly Guitar Strap
9/10 oz vegtan leather, carved, tooled, and dyed by hand, padded, lined 56" fixed length. One of my best to date, I think.
Credit does go to Johnny Z for the dragonfly idea, and the vintage goldtop pics that inspired this and will be mated with.
Dumb thing, but I really can't wait to see how the water ripples match up with the checking on the backside of that paul, and
the colour of the knocked-back gold matches with the top. I believe it's going to be near perfection.
some extra custom asks on this one... a Well-Hung first: front side-grab pick caddy, four slots... and an extra larger pocket where you can hide 'em
when not in action
This customer also wants a back end cable-keeper loop, so his lead doesn't go inside and rub all up against precious.
Drilled here for Dunlops, as much as I don't care for mechanical straplocks some folks just gotta wear 'em.

Like the cable loop idea and execution
^ thanks @UrenragK - So the other day a fellow in a band called Zombie roof contacted me about a sweet leather tooling project concept. Threw him a price, after factoring in a new leather stamp that hadsta come all the way from Great Britain, cost an extra two weeks and about thirty bucks or so. Well..... CRAP, that kinda stung!
Suddenly, I got me a honey of an idea... swarmed through all my extra junk I got stored around here.
After a few minutes buzzin' away with an angle grinder and a file...
BOOM! This here's gonna be the bees knees, and going to save us both some time and money too!
Who here doesn't have a bunch extra of those uselessly lying around? One less for me now.
Also ongoing...
This one...
And this one... still trying to decide, blue? Or red?

Workin' with a guy who wanted a python strap with a sparkly Plum Crazy sort of vibe, and possibly chrome silver involved, and what goes as fast as american muscle
Took some real doing to match the colours (five dye steps!), but we did ok, a real process!
If I listen close I can kind of hear a 340-ish rumble, and it definitely smells like gas (which is quite a bit better than burnt rubber).
Also, while we are on-theme, just finished this one, Ace of Spades in Pimpin' Graple
This one I called "hummybird" which now has put my head on a swivel, got me on the alert for evil snarling attack lawyers
And, this leathery piece of badass that I custom dyed and painted a few days ago...
Also going on in the Straplab... A custom build for the craftsman behind http://www.addictguitars.com/ and there is quite a tragic/redeeming story behind him and his work. If you like a story, have a visit to his website. Many more pics on f-book, this one is ongoing.
Finally... How do you choose if you got two real nice guitars, but only one Well-Hung strap?
