Sometimes we, that buy and have so many guitars over the years, lose track of just what we have. At least a dozen years ago I walked into the GC and saw an used Gibson Midtown Custom in black hanging there with a price tag of $900. Long story short, it came home with me. I played it some then for some reason it just got relegated to the closet.

Last week before the gig I was pondering which semi I would take to the gig and the Midtown popped into my little brain. I dug it out and took it along. It still had 10's on it and for the last few years I have gone from 9's to now 8's so it felt a little stiff to me but, holy shit does that guitar sing. the Burstbuckers sound so good through the Vox Night Train head, articulate and smooth. I ended up playing it the entire first set, and then some in the third. I am reluctant to take my 335 to gigs but this Midtown will see a lot of action until further notice. I put 8's on it and reset the intonation. It should be good to go for the gig today.

On the flip side of the coin, I have a guitar that, try as I might, I can't get used to. It's sentimental so I keep it in the closet. Every once in a while, I'll take it out, play it, and then return it to the closet because it's just not right for me.

For me that journey of discovery generally goes something like this:

I discover "guitar A" for the first time and say, "I can't live without this!"

For a month it's like a honeymoon . . . until I discover "guitar B," after which guitar A gets put away.

At some point in the future I rediscover guitar A and say, "This sounds and plays like crap! Why did I even buy this?" But after some further tweaking of the set up and quality time spent together I fall in love again with guitar A.

But then I discover new "guitar C" and guitar A is put away once again.

Later down the road I rediscover guitar A once again and think to myself, "How am I ever going to be able to sell this piece of crap?"

Shortly after somebody discovers that I own guitar A and offers to buy it from me, to which I invariably respond, "I love that guitar! It's not for sale!"

I know, I have issues.

I think I also remember your NGD for that Midtown. I hope it stays in rotation for a while!

I do love rediscovery and many of my guitars go through that. Some of the abandonment examples are the ones which feel like home and enable me, get preference to the ones which are temperamental and sometimes fight me. For example, my black 1985 Ibanez AM70 semi-hollow is stunning, until it starts fighting me.

My most under played guitar I have is a 1996 Fender USA Standard Stratocaster (40th Anniversary edition). According to my string change log, it received a new set of strings an Eb tuning in February 2022 and hasn't been touched since. I am only an occasional Strat player to begin with and I prefer my 2016 Squier Affinity (with the same AMI pickups), mainly due to the lighter weight and better feeling neck. But for some reason I hold on to it.

Well, I was getting ready to try to sell my Watson Wolfgang copy but after I cleaned it up and got it ready, I looked at it and....fell back in love with it. I ended up keeping it and upgrading it.

I played the Midtown the entire first set, I played the Goldtop the entire second set and shared the duties in the third. They definitely go together well. It was an all Gibson day again. I have been using my Gibson Songbird with the band. It seems to fit.
