NGD! Ibanez RG560

Part of this might be TMI, but, as I was sitting in the toilet on Monday (Canadian Thanksgiving), I checked a local used gear shop's web page -- they often update on Sundays. Within moments of seeing this beast -- especially at the price they were asking, including case, I bought it.

It's a late 80s/early 90s Ibanez RG560 -- basically the 570, but HSS. It has a few marks, but....MOJO.

On to the pics!

Yes it has the original Edge trem, which retains its status as a god-tier trem. Original pickups, I assume, but I'll have to see once I get a chance to check things out.

My old RG410 that was stolen over 20 years ago was a similar colour, and I am happy to have another red Ibanez in the (looks around)....uh, increasingly sizeable collection. Can't wait to get it set up to my liking with a fresh set of strings.

Let the whammy foolishness begin!

Nice! Reb Beach's weapon of choice back in the day was an RG with a HSS pickup configuration.

What's the blue mystery pedal sitting inside the guitar case? Was that included in the deal? Anybody who buys lots of used guitars knows that you can find all kinds free stuff included in the storage compartment of the case . . . picks, packs of strings, cords, clip on tuners, and yes, even a pedal! I once found a vintage Marshall Governor pedal inside a guitar case. Bonus! So what's the deal with the blue pedal?

Thanks guys. My basement seems to be where the 80s live forever. I am hoping to spend some quality time with it this weekend. I'll post my findings.

It's a Flamma Harmony pedal for my side gig as a "vocal stylist." We don't have any background singers (or mics for them) so I figured that this might fatten out some songs.

This shop checks stuff out, so no freebies. It's actually the same shop as on the sticker on the back of the headstock. Song Bird got sold to its employees quite a few years ago, and is now Spaceman Music.

I paid a bit less than 560 :)

That is a hard deal to pass on, especially for a got-away.

For some reason, this store seems to undervalue the old Japanese shredders. This one's a player grade to be sure, but they often sell 560s for less than $600 Cdn. I waffled on the last one, but didn't hesitate this time.

Now if they could just get a maple board 550 with a little mojo, it would grab my interest.

I am.sick, so I have been sitting at home. I decided to restring the ol' thing and get it set up a bit.

I started by pulling old strings that I am.quite convinced were 11s. Anyway, they wuz dead. I cleaned the headstock (this was partway through).
20241029_104538.jpg
I also rubbed the neck down with a microfibre cloth. This thing's frets are quite used.
20241029_104627.jpg
Eek! I may be in for a refret!

I also pulled the back cavity. The springs were set up differently than I am used to, though they may work.out the same as my usual "fork" configuration.
20241029_104310.jpg
Anyway, I forked 'em.

Then I decided to see if I had picked up a bonus in the form of aftermarket pickups.
20241029_104750.jpg
20241029_105033.jpg
Nope. But I do have a Tone Zone lying around....not today though.

I put on the strings and set about...er, setting up. I had to adjust the claw and do a lot of fiddling, but I got the knives nice and level. I also raised the bridge pickup, which made a nice difference.

That said, there are still a few things to do:

1) The trem knives need lubrication. They don't return.to zero as they should.

2) The trem block is about 32mm long. Oddly enough, I have a 32mm fat brass block to fit a Gotoh bridge. And the Edge was made by Gotoh. Hmmm....

3) I haven't set the intonation yet. That said, if the bridge is going to come apart for a new block...

4) The volume pot works perfectly, but has very little physical resistance. It's like a Bourns EVH pot. I'll have to see if I get used to it. Of course, if I were to change pickups....

I'd better cut this out or this guitar will become a project.

Those RG560s are killer, and it’s awesome it reminds you of your old RG410. I had a similar moment when I found a guitar that brought back some memories—it just feels right, you know? The Edge trem is perfect for all the crazy whammy stuff you can throw at it. Once you get it strung up and dialed in, you’ll be golden. Honestly, messing around with new gear like this always makes me want to learn new tricks. I’ve even checked out some music lessons online to spice up my playing—it’s been pretty helpful.
