So I was just musing over what "WE" have and they don't.
1) We have a SECURED WEBSITE (SSL). MOFO does too but the old AGF DID NOT.
2) Feature for feature WE BEAT THEM and BADLY at that:
We are Hardware agnostic, Operating System agnostic, Cross ALL Browser platforms and are owned by the members.
A DEDICATED support staff that fields change requests, enhancements and improvements from it's members.
Other than the old content, which has been rendered USELESS and VALUELESS monetarily for the most part, they LOST any way you look at it.
I can live with that. What about you?

The biggest attraction to this place by far is the people.

We have a responsive website that can handle the traffic that's got production-ready code. Honestly, Jae Whan Shin must've hired one Korean developer to write the whole site as a proof of concept (POC) then never paid someone competent to make it production-ready later. We keep on talking about how bad momoboard is, but I "never assume malice where stupidity or incompetence will suffice" (Hanlon's Razor). Looking Mr. Shin up, he went to architecture school in France. I'm guessing this was his first startup. I don't how something like this would pass muster to get funding unless he's wealthy and/or connected, but what do I know.

I saw that the company name was registered even early in the 2000's (but it might've not been done by him). It's kind of crazy to think that someone could fail on one business idea so many times and yet still persist. But, it might've not been the same person/people failing the whole time.LightWingStudios wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 12:49 pm

Wow! really?? 2011 and that mess was all he had. Tom must have been paid well to dump us into that mess. Or maybe he has enough money he didn't really care just so long as he got rid of agf.LightWingStudios wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 12:49 pmHis first version of MOFO was in 2011. I still would like to keep my archives live and searchable. Maybe if I added a tidbit of info on some product or other its nice to keep that available for whoever is interested. So far they seem to be in no hurry to turn the old one off. Maybe it all went so badly everyone walked away and it wont die until the domain bill or hosting service run out of prepayment. Maybe keep track of it and in the right moment we can swoop in and regain control?

I had made the mistake of creating a new account and had to sent the delete request and it seems I've been MoMo'd
All of my old content is gone.
Considering the number of active members and traffic, I suspect that the old AGF did not have much value. My theory is Major Tom turned it over for a piece of the MOMO action. He wouldn't have been working with them for several months prior if it was just a straight sale. The day he took it over from Jeff C was the first day of his AGF membership. When Jeff C took it over from the previous owner, the same thing unless they had signed up previously with aliases..

I was able to find threads of yours on the MOMO site going back to 11/15/17. Coincidentally, it was a heads-up on a red lefty AL-2000. Here's a link but not sure if it's accessible without being a MOMO member:Razzle wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 6:19 pmI haven't checked A Gaff In Your Face (AGF) in a while but just did...nomadh wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 5:17 pm I still would like to keep my archives live and searchable. Incidentally, even though the MOMO AGF is locked down, by searching for a member, you can still access most, if not all of their posts. I was able to go back to my very first post in March 2014...

The Members are the biggest deal. That said, here, we have an eminently usable site. Without that, the members would not have come along. MOMO proved that. Again, appreciate not only the Great Job you did with this site Lightwings, but also the Warp Speed with which you pulled it off!LightWingStudios wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 11:34 am So I was just musing over what "WE" have and they don't.

What I don't understand about Minor Tom's actions is this:
He owned AGF. He decided to sell it, or got an unsolicited offer.
Why did he not let the forum members know to see if someone on the forum wanted to buy it?
If no forum member wanted to buy it, he could tell us that the forum would be sold to Momo and then give us some time to become familiar with both the idea of a change in owenership, but also to become familiar with the Momo layout.
It seems idiotic to me to not at least give a forum member the chance to equal or exceed the amount proferred by Momo. That's just from a monetary point of view.
But by selling the forum out from under us, changing it to a completely new (and unusable) layout, and just springing it on us, he pissed us all off, alienated us, and destroyed any chance of AGF members going to Momo.
Dumb on many levels.

There has been some speculation that maybe Tom was offered stock/or some other piece of momo as an incentive.peskypesky wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 11:43 pmWhat I don't understand about Minor Tom's actions is this:

After seeing that dumpster fire I cannot believe that theory for even a second. I think Tom was/is way smarter than that.
I think Tom and Jae are both drunk on the theoretical financial potential of aggregating communities and monetizing the data, so when his path crossed with Shin's he was ripe for a collaboration. I suspect that in person Jae must be a pretty good salesman/bullshitter. I've read his various accounts of himself, which are all quite self-promoting, but rather unlikely if you are prone to look at them with a critical eye. But he is very strategic when it comes to making himself look good - he hangs out in all the right places, uses the right buzzwords, and has a carefully crafted mix of alluding to things without being specific. He *has* managed to get seasoned VC investors to give him money for nothing more than, well, a dream, really....
I would assume the old AGF basically paid for itself, so it is like evicting your nice quiet tennant who may not be paying top dollar, but will be leasing your place for decades for a meth cook who paid the deposit then blew up the house the day he moved in...
10 years, 2 months, and 8 days of blissful ignorance ruined by that snake in the grass Major Tom.
I think your theory is most likely spot on and makes the most sense considering what we do know...Houblues wrote: ↑Fri Jun 05, 2020 12:11 am I think Tom and Jae are both drunk on the theoretical financial potential of aggregating communities and monetizing the data, so when his path crossed with Shin's he was ripe for a collaboration. Well, you know vulture capitalists make all kinds of bets knowing most will fail but a winner here and a winner there and you’re in tall cotton. This bet came up snake eyes. Too bad they crapped in our bed and flushed our history - but they’ll just move on to the next “opportunity.”

The way they thoug hthey just owned us and could move us to another board and we all would just comply made me think of this.
