I think I've bought about half dozen of those. :D

Do NOT buy one of those without an extended warranty. Even the BMW fan mags say not to nab a modern one without a warranty.

I look at those longingly every once in a while. Then I read things like it how costs $1100 to change out the dash lights and think maybe I'll hold off for a bit....

Knowing 5 people who owned Bavarian cars, I wouldn't take free unless someone else was paying the maintenance costs. But that's me I'm to cheap to knowingly buy into a brand with high maintenance costs.

Dash lights if you're lucky. Timing chain guides and tensioners, intake manifold and valve cover gaskets, cheap rubber o-rings used to seal the water manifolds on some of their V8s, and the ultimate sin, no freakin' dipstick! :o

That doesn't count their usual foibles, like the cooling systems and the %&*$$ window regulators.

And the problem is, they aren't as good to drive anymore. No reason to take the risk, unless you are looking for a weekend fun car like a 1994 M3.

Can you tell I used to own a BMW?
