I was born and raised outside of Charlotte, NC, about a mile from Davidson College. But my teen years, and the place that I call home, were spent in Titusville, FL. I went to high school directly across the river from the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building.) My high school years and the 5 years that I lived in the Philippines are the two best periods of my life.

I have never rafted the Ocoee tho my late wife used to do it frequently. She had a friend who was a "rafting guide" and the TVA will pull your license if you go rafting
with less than a full raft. So every time he needed another person to take a trip, he'd phone her. I was born & raised about 10 or 12 miles from where the Ocoee
rafting happens & the high school I graduated from had a Ducktown, TN mailing address. Naturally, we retired in the Panama City, FL area.

I have visited the Biltmore House several times in my life.
Asheville is a lovely town & if North Carolina did not have state income tax we might have retired there.

Would you believe that in harsh winter conditions, the shoreline is loaded with enormous ice blocks!


Reason is, on Cape Cod, fresh water mixes with salt or brackish water in many spot, even near bottom of inland ponds. I got into studying the odd local geology, all kinds of weird stuff like that.

I earned my raft guide certification from NOC. We had an awesome instructor.

I think that my class got as extra gold star because it was 50 degrees and raining the entire time (five days) . Nothing ever dried. We spent a great deal of time in the river doing swimmer rescues and therefore practicing hypothermia first aid. F******k it was cold. Blue lips all around, every day.

The interesting thing about that place is that it's dam release. On our ride up to the put in the river is dry and by the time we launched each morning it was at maximum flow. The Oregon and Colorado guide certs were a breeze compared to that. Bigger water (and bigger boats) but not as technical.

My love of water is what brought me to Steamboat (not the skiing). A beautiful river flows right through town. Disclaimer: Two years ago I gained some weight and could no longer squeeze into my kayak so I sold it. I meant to buy another the following spring but new interests came up.

@tlarson58 was your instructor's name Ron if so he's the drummer I played with for 15 years in our band and still record with. He's not working there any more he's too old now but he worked there for many years. He's from NJ just out side of NY he's an old left over hippie and you can't forget him if you ever heard him speak. Anyway he was our connection to NOC to play there. There were a bunch of cabins on a bunch of land called Lands Creek some guys from Florida bought the land built the cabins. They were very good musicians and also built the a recording studio on the property I don't believe it's still there because engineer moved back to Florida. Anyway we would play at a bar in Bryson City on Friday night and use the gig money to pay for the weekend in one of their cabins and they always wanted to jam so we had free run of the studio and those were some of the best times I've ever had from playing music we also got one of our original songs called "Successful Man" recorded there, This is it

I was raised in Folsom, PA (1962 to 1969 and 1971 to 1978) where there is basically nothing to do there. Our highlight was the ice cream trucks and the mosquito sprayer truck (may explain a lot about me!). We rode bikes a lot.

From 1969 to 1971, I lived in the foot hills of Glendale, CA and did a lot of hiking.

From 1978 to 2014, I lived in Media, PA, State College, PA, Aston, PA and West Grove, PA. Lot of raising a family, playing music in clubs, etc.

I now reside in Lake Saint Louis, MO (the very western part of St. Charles County), where you can basically do anything. Great place to live!

Outside of Austin, Denton definitely is near the top of the list for music scenes in the state of Texas. The University of North Texas churns out pros from their music department every year, and if you see a band here, they are almost always stellar players and perform in every genre imaginable.

I'm from NYC, so the answer is "just about anything" except for very outdoorsy stuff. We have legendary museums, shopping, theater, historical sites, urban parks, zoos, sports, etc. You can go canoeing or fishing in the rivers, although I wouldn't call those "world-class", and we do have beaches, although ditto on those. There is even a rifle range in Manhattan and a casino in Queens.*

No skiing, no spelunking, no whitewater, probably no skydiving or hot-air ballooning. No fireworks. (Of your own, I mean; the official shows are pretty damn good.) Oh, and no legal weed yet (the politicians have smelled the money, but now they're busy fighting over who gets to control it). Hunting is right out although a very lawyerly reading of the laws suggests that hunting rats and pigeons with a non-wrist-braced slingshot is technically legal.

If you were raised a little bit north, Scranton Wilkes-Barre area, we had a lot to do. Besides going across the street in the winter to get the neighbors coal ashes to spread on your hilly sidewalk, all you had to do was look down the street, pizza shop, barber shop, bar, church. Look the other direction, pizza shop, barber shop, bar, church.

I drove through the west FL coast without spending much time, this may have been a mistake. Most intriguing was that island with the secretive high-end properties, a whole other world, then you get back on land, and its like small town with cars on blocks every other house!

I was in San Diego with my wife a few years ago, and we were really taken with it - my reaction was "This is like Phoenix plus the ocean." But yeah, our second reaction was, "This would be a great place to live...if we were multimillionaires."
