It's been a busy couple months but this is finally done
I'd have been done a month ago but the neck and body fell off my workbench together. The body fared ok, just a finish crack that I was able to repair decently, but the neck was a loss. I salvaged the fret board and truss rod and started from scratch.
Good to have this one done. It's small, but its loud.

Some naphtha on the sides. There's a lot going on visually with this wood, between the figure and the grain itself. It should look pretty sweet all done up.
Really Great looking wood. Thank you for taking time to document this build!

Very nice! Are you going to post some sound clips?

Thank you. I need to put some practice in first, been spending all my free time building them instead of playing them.

I know how you feel... I'm currently on a self-imposed hiatus from build projects so that I can practice more, and get more comfortable with recording.

Also, my first time attempting this feature, and it turned out pretty good - a side port.
Just a bit of sanding left, then I can route the dovetail pocket and start applying shellac.
Sideport! I love it! I think? I love the concept and I've only played a few. A few times maybe not special to me but some other times it seemed really great.

I'm behind in this thread. That build is beautiful. Terrible about the neck. Did the head break off? I've only built a dulcimer back in hs. I tried it without making a mold for the body. It turned out a little lopsided. But it worked. I always dreamed of progressing on to doing something like yours. Just never did it. I guess playing them takes enough time.

Thanks. It is a good idea, but this was first time even trying a guitar with a side port, so I don't really have a good context for comparison. I think its helpful on a small body guitar like this to get a bit more volume out of it. It was basically just an opportunity to try something new from a build perspective.

Thanks. The head stock was actually fine but I ended up with cracks under the fret board on both sides of the neck. I could have probably salvaged it, but seeing as I was building it from scratch I'd rather have a clean neck rather than something with scars from the get go.
I love building these but the playing really suffers with the time spent dedicated to the build.

The links to the sound demos are not showing up on my end though @TheIrritableLuthier
Ok, I've been slacking off with this, I know. I haven't been particularly satisfied with my playing as of late, but here's at least something passable.
Some simple strumming. Just recorded with my cell phone in my little practice room with crappy acoustics.
Here's another short one with some fingerpicking. Ignore the clams and tempo changes
This one I'm actually plugged into an amp. I'm running through a Fishman rare earth humbucking, into a brown face Vibrolux clone, with a little bit of reverb. The volume on the amp is down quite a bit, so as not to distort the cellphone mic, so the bulk of what you're actually hearing is the guitar itself.
