Old Encore Les Paul - Upgradable?

One of these old Encore Les Pauls popped up locally. 150 bucks. I like the natural top a lot. From what I understand, these were inexpensive entry level student guitars. And not necessarily the best quality. This one has a little bit nicer head stock than most, obviously that doesn't mean it's a great guitar. If I upgraded electronics and hardware...will this become decent and playable? Or is this a brand best to avoid? Thanks!
