Hello guys...

I'm a bit lost here in the new AGF. The topics are quite different from the old.

But what really bugs me is the number of subfolders. Does there really have to be a gazillion subfolders for each topic? It's impossible to read really.

For instance, does there really have to be subfolder for each guitar manufacturer pretty much? Why? Or each type of pedal?

I for one do NOT like having to skim through a dozen folders, for pedals for instance it'd be waaaay better just to have a single folder for all pedals. Then it'd be easy to just scroll through and read up on stuff and maybe find inspiration.

As it is, I don't even know where to post something without searching for a few minutes what would be the most appropriate subfolder to put it in, and by then I just give up. Even worse than when browsing.

Is it frowned upon if I just post in the root where possible? Is there a reason for having a gazillion pre-made subfolders? It's really killing my willingness to follow the forum and post.

I agree, I think having folders at the topic level and maybe one or two subtopics ( Guitars > Electric / Acoustic) but too much drilling down is not productive.

Yes, I really don't see the point in dissecting it down so much. I remember there was talk of even reducing the number of topics in the old AGF, ie combining the windows and apple recording threads into one DAW recording folder since pretty much all things about DAW recording apply the same to each system.

But you are right, there should be a few general subfolders like electric and acoustic guitar. Under pedals there could be a subfolder multiFX units separately, And under amps maybe like small amps, modeling amp, toob amps and so on...but currently there's just waaaay too many.

At the upper left of the initial screen you will see
QUICK LINKS
It is your friend. Click on it and you will get several options like
NEW POSTS (Equivalent of the HOME page on the old software.)
UNREAD POSTS (Threads that have been posted to since you last read the thread)
ACTIVE TOPICS (Just what it sounds like.)
And several others. Any thread that has a little red square to its left has posts you have not read.
Click on the little red square to go to the first unread post.

Ah, yes, but I use Tapatalk to access. Very seldom the browser. It does show new posts just fine though, or at least a few latest ones.

Tapatalk is the devil in app form. I hate it. But I hate doing anything like a forum on my phone.

There is NO PROBLEM. There is CHANGE. Changing Of The Guard and an opportunity.

The "CONCEPT AND MISSION" of The New AGF is to OPEN this site up to as many people as possible beyond the original "Rondo World" which quite honestly is in decline due to competition in the marketplace.

WE LOST ALOT OF MEMBERS AFTER BEING MOFO'D. Our collective goal is to rebuild, recruit and expand.

The idea of creating a significant number of sub folders is to allow posts to be put in their appropriate areas of interest.

For example, someone looking for an Echo pedal shouldn't have to scroll thru 200 messages in a single folder and end up NOT finding what they are looking for. They may or may not find what they are looking for in the "Echo Pedal"sub folder BUT they CAN post their question THERE where it will NOT get "lost in the sauce" of 200 other totally unrelated pedal messages.

Instant gratification is not the goal here...providing a diverse yet precise, accurate and informative platform IS.

Sure it may take 30 seconds to get where you want to but what's the rush?

The inherent LIMITATIONS of a 3" x 5" screen on a phone is being accommodated as much as it can be while bearing in mind we are trying to be as diverse as possible across hardware platforms...PC/Mac, Tablet, Phone.

Nothing in this world is perfect. Yet if one is willing to be flexible and understands that not everyone walks around staring at their "Star Trek Communicators" all day there will indeed be Joy In Mudville.

That's where search is your friend. In fact even if there is plenty of information already about a certain, say a pedal, somewhere, and even an already discussed thread, I'd rather make a new question about it. In fact I never ever search for info already there because what's fun about that?

For me, it's nothing to do with information. There's a gazillion places to find information. It's about discussing things. Even if it's the same thing over and over again, it's good.

In fact it wouldn't matter any if all content over 6 months old were always deleted unless accessed. That'd keep the forum more streamlined. Snapchat type forum management.

I suppose that's why Facebook groups are so popular. There's no burden of folders or such, just lively discussion going on. Only when a certain issue starts to come up again and again daily, it's added to permanent links or FAQ.

Besides it's usually much easier to just search Google for any info, takes less time than browsing through folders to find info. Like in my computer, I can't remember the last time I actually used file manager, it's almost 100% just hit search and that's it. Folders are so last century by now.

I don't think I ever will browse this forum by folders either. I'll try to post in a subforum however, if there is one for the subject.

All of you thinking there are too many subfolders. Where were all of you when I said this as we opened up? I got no support.

I think we should have had effects, DIY, recording and guitars <$100, 100 to $250 and corksniffers ;)

Not all. 2 or 3. 99% like it the way it is and will stay.

You solved you own point. Use "Search" it will take you where you want with or without the current structure.

Bear in mind a couple of people here are doing all this work for FREE and we are in no way inclined to rip it all down at this point.
