Had a friend who used to do that. He once told me (30 years ago) "Here's how you see if you want to get into this hobby. Take a couple $100 dollar bills out of your pocket, light them on fire and let them drop to the ground. If that bothers you, find another hobby"

You gotta get out in the woods and on the lake! Wife and I are on the lake every weekend we can, which in summer is most.Flatline wrote:I coach 13U travel baseball
I also like to hunt and fish, but I haven't had time due to baseball in a couple years. I have a bass boat that hasn't seen water in at least 2 years.

Yep. I agree. Baseball has turned into a year round sport. Spring practice, Spring-summer games, fall league, winter workouts, late winter in-door practice, rinse and repeat.brentona wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 2:52 pmYou gotta get out in the woods and on the lake! We're doing pretty good right now. So far we have gone 6-2 and won our tournament this past weekend. My son is super into it and having a blast. He pitched a 5 inning no hitter on Sunday.

I have two young kids, so I don't get to do much that doesn't involve them.
That said,I would love to get a project car. Not a rust bucket, but something that I can jazz up a bit.
Maybe a Fox body Mustang, or a modern Mini. Even an Audi TT or VW New Beetle Turbo would work.
Gotta lose some weight to fit in a lot of cars though.
I would love to try writing as well, but time is an issue with the kids and all.

I build stuff outta wood, sometimes MDF. I'm currently building myself a multi game arcade cabinet.
Next project: may be a porch glider, may be a driving game cabinet. Who's to say?
I also play a few video games and I love the old stuff. Anything new(ish), I'll play on XBox One or Switch.
My very favorite video game is an audio program called FL Studio. I sit and produce a lot of crap music, but sometimes fart out something I can be proud of. I practice playing bass, sometimes pick up a guitar. If I do pick up a guitar, it's likely either to track it or mod it. Guitar practice isn't in me anymore.
I also have an ongoing habit of trying to find a fun band to join. I was a part of a really good one once, and no others seem to live up to the expectation. That's on me, I do realize.
I've almost completely stopped watching television. Instead I watch instructional videos from Udemy, Youtube, Masterclass... I'm addicted. t's amazing what you can pick up...

Dude that is amazing work!
I have a shop attached to the house that I make the furniture we need for the house but it’s purely for us. I enjoy it and don’t want to make it anything more than for us and my enjoyment.
I have a buddy who is making a living selling soccer moms the farmhouse furniture they love. He is really good at it. Not my cup of tea, but boy does it sell! He gets his oak rough sawn form an Amish family not far from where he lives. He got a huge supply of real old oak barn board from a barn that collapsed. He’s in hog heaven and loving it! I have a ton of respect for you guys who do such great work!
Here is my modest addition -
The dining table started as a white bottom and was in the kitchen, we my wife re-painted it flat black for the actual dining room
I’ve made some more various things for the house and my wife specifically, but the table sees a lot of use. As does the dog bowl holders!

I like this thread, there are a lot of very talented people here.
brentona - my Grandfather was a huge outdoor enthusiast and was very much into archery, he hand-made and sold recurve bows and wooden arrows for hunting, mostly whitetail deer around here. He passed away almost 50 years ago but we still have a couple of his bows and personal arrrows in a case, cool stuff. I think there has been a resurgence of recurve hunting in the past years, I have considered it myself becasue the gun season is so short and way too many people in the woods - the bow season goes all fall/winter and you can do it almost anywhere.
Most of my free time is mostly consumed with activities surrounding my kids - scouting, camping, biking, fishing, going to gymnastics meets ( well before covid at least ). Guitars are a good hobby for me as you can do it almost anytime/anywhere you have a spare minute or two.
I do enjoy gardening when I have a chance, mostly just raised beds and pots due to poor soil and a short growing season.
I like guns too and have taken shooting back up as a hobby in the past year or so. I guess I kind of got suckered in by the initial corona/election year gun buying frenzy and ended up buying a few handguns ( A Glock G19, a Sig P365 and an S&W M&P .22 ) and a S&W M&P 15 rifle. I also dusted off some of my old family guns -an older Winchester Model 94 in .32 winchester and a couple of old beater .22s. It's been fun to shoot with my son and something you can still do in quarantine at the outdoor range. Even our Indoor Range stayed open through most of the hard lockdown as an "essential" business for self defense practice
My latest hobby is searching for a new job, but hopefully that won't last too long!

Thanks! Looks like you do some pretty good work yourself!
There's nothing wrong with MDF - it's a little messy - but it cuts well and doesn't warp.
I'm overbuilding this arcade. I'm trying some new (to me) techniques on it, which is why it's being made more of a thing than it needs to be. The only real issue I've had so far is that the lack of a table saw is really slowing me down with the project. I'm having to clamp a fence down to rout along in order to get straight edged sides. My little shop just isn't big enough to house a proper table saw, and I rarely need it for guitars anyway.
I like woodworking, and I know for a fact that I could do a lot better with my little guitar side hustle than I do - but I know that turning hobbies into responsibilities ruins them. I'm considering taking on some of the commissioned work I've been asked about later this summer. It would be a tidy little pile of cash to get them done, and it's getting tough to resist it.

I’m retired and have a couple of homes and like to work around them and keep busy. Also got back into motorcycles several years ago. I turn 73 this summer and I wanted a little more stability so am transitioning to three wheels. Sold my Honda two weeks ago and have a Can Am Spyder RT Limited being shipped in from Ann Arbor to Salt Lake City. Due to arrive any day now. Can’t wait. This a pic from the dealer.

I seem to fall into volunteer gigs. I'm currently neck deep in one that may have been too big of an undertaking but I'll see it through and re-up in the fall when this one ends if I don't flood her house, kill the crop or die from exhaustion.
It's wonderful, though and I'm documenting it with video clips (which has become a new passion). Here's a short one. Leigh's husband died in December and we've been learning to irrigate on the fly (he had always managed the field).
She has zero money but lives on property worth millions. She doesn't want to sell and needs some help. In this clip we make water flow downhill.* The McMansion in the background is her neighbor's and on par with most of the other nearby properties.
I am also trying to stay active with my soon-to-be 12 year-old dog. I made a sled for her this winter (she walks up ok but gets tired/stops on the way down) and converted it into a bike buggy this spring for the ride to work.
*for my next trick, I'll make hot air rise.

Agreed on the bowhunting too! That’s my preferred way to hunt. You definitely need to have your scent control down pat for those 30y and in shots!! I know a couple bowyers and I gotta tell ya! That is such a skill. True artisan work and a functional bow are really cool.

Thank you for the kind words! I would love to add a real table saw to the mix as well! I’m pretty handy with a circular, but a decent table would help me in a big way.rrobbone wrote:Thanks! Looks like you do some pretty good work yourself!

I hear you on the dogs! We have three and one just turned ten. He’s a little chiweenie with a back that sometimes acts up. I recent built him a nice ramp to get down the steps in the back yard.
