Banjo lessons ?

Love this. I just sent it to the band. We have a banjo player who we tease unmercifully. The problem is that he's the best at his instrument in the foursome.

I believe a banjo is a lot like Scottish bagpipes in that you either love the sound of it or its sound affects you like a the sound of a fingernail scraping on a chalkboard.

In all honesty, a well-played banjo is really impressive. The problem is that banjo players seem to come down about 10 to 1 the wrong way on "I am a serious student of traditional Americana" vs. "I am an insufferable hipster."

You know since I play 99% of the time in Open G and I understand that standard banjo tuning is basically Open G, I should probably give one a whirl someday

My parents live next to a large park/natural area. In the Summer, the local bagpipe troupe ( or whatever it's called? ) has a group practice in the nature center parking lot on Saturday mornings. It's just far enough away from their house that you can't see it, but it sounds like they are sitting right in the back yard when they fire ( blow? ) up those things. It sounds kind of cool for about 5 minutes, but after that my dad usually puts on his hearing protectors and fires up the lawn tractor for the duration.

When I was in university, one summer I worked security in the residence buildings. The Governore General's Foot Guard were staying there, including the band, which had pipers. They used to practice in one of the parking lots, and the sound would be carried by the wind into the residence area, where it would bounce gently off the buildings. It was quite stirring (in a good way -- they could play) to my Scottish components.

And I firmly believe it isn't an "occasion" without someone wearing a kilt!

i have one and have spent several hours trying to learn to play it, then put it down for six months at a time. i like the sound and i do wish i could play competently because there have been plenty of times when i've been in a group of people where there were a half dozen (or a dozen) guitar players, one bassist, one drummer and nobody else. guys, we're a dime a dozen.
