My Solution to Option Paralysis

Specifically, in regard to music while I've driving. I own hundreds of cassettes, maybe even a thousand, though this plastic case confines me to fifteen choices while on the go. I dig this Panasonic shoebox cassette player because it reminds me of how I originally listened to this music when I was sixteen years old and driving around in my parents Dodge Aries Station Wagon. I change out the fifteen cassettes regularly, though this is what's in the box right now.

One of my favorite features on my current vehicle is it's ability to let me play music off a thumb drive. I keep 4 in the car, each carrying over 1,000 sings I have loaded onto them. Each contains a particular "genre' (I am using that term pretty loosely) they are:

Christian
R and B
Jazz
Christmas

Mostly, I put one in, put it on random and ride!

Those old portable cassette players bring back memories. I think the first "rock and roll" cassettes I got were KISS Alive II, and Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits. I wore that portable out. Luckily my parents bought me and my brother a full stereo with cassette/turntable and AM/FM from Sears the following Christmas, and I thought I had gone to heaven. And promptly bought "13 records for a penny" from CRC. Those were the days.

Wow that's a blast from the past. I still listen to a lot of the old stuff I used to have on tape/vinyl, but I moved away from those media. I was always bothered by tape hiss, wow and flutter, and of course the eventual player eating the tape. Vinyl, similarly, my ears never liked pops and clicks and the sound of the needle scraping the disc when it was otherwise quiet. I was glad when CDs took over, and although not as good, I'm fine with MP3 quality for general listening. Also averse to paying subscriptions, I do free streaming and also have some thumb drives I randomize. I own some cassettes, but none commercial anymore. That's just too many moving/wearing parts for me. But I'd probably enjoy a day listening to old tapes.

I do a similar thing but with the ever expanding size of thumb drives these days I have my entire music collection cross indexed several ways: by album, by genre such as classical, country, pop, rock, etc. If I select something like "classic rock" (which I define as 50's, 60's & 70's) I can drive from Florida to Tennessee without repeating! Selecting "country" would probably allow me to drive coast to coast without repeats!
