I don’t remeber where either live in Florida , but know they are Florida residents. Are either of you in the path of Hurricane Helene headed that way. My brother lives in the Tampa area and will not see the brunt of this storm if it stays on its projected path. How are you guys fairing? We just finished with one a few weeks ago that thankfully just made a mess and left us without power for a few days.

Tonebender should be clear, but it's headed right at Mickey.

How about yourself? That’s supposed to be one hell of a storm.

I'm on the Atlantic side and about a half hour north of Ryan. While there's been the usual wind and rain bands passing through, other than a lot of palm fronds on the streets, nothing is really going on. No power interruptions in my immediate area either....

Lots of Floridian’s here. You might make or the largest population here from a single state. Wonder if Mickey is evacuating.

Mickey always mentions that his structures are up to latest codes.
Not sure about trees, flooding and such though. He had tree issues last major storm, I think.
These freaking storms are so enormous.

Let's hope everyone stay safe.

EDIT: the NWS Talahassee on twiitter this afternoon is showing flood warnings in his area.

This is just a rainstorm here. The worst of it will be about 100+ miles east of me.
After all Jim Cantore spent all day today in Tallahassee & is still there! :D

I noticed Cantore there... getting soft?

@mickey sorta manageable now, but there is a lot more to come, isn't there?

Well that’s good to hear. Could not remember where you lived in Florida and was hoping it would not affect you much. Hopefully it will fizzle out for the folks that are affected the most.

I'm in the Panama City area & about 12 miles inland.
I think it is apt to do as much (or more) damage up in Georgia because it isn't predicted to slow down as it moves inland & Georgia does NOT have hurricane resistant building codes like Florida does. In Florida, if you are within 5 miles of the coast NEW CONSTRUCTION must be engineered to withstand a cat 5 storm & within 10 miles a cat 4 storm. Hurricane Andrew caused that.

This split the difference again just like the other two. 100 miles west of me and 100 miles east of Mickey. I will be picking up tree debris again. Just a wind and rain event for us. The coast however is getting flooding from the surge. Thanks for concern guys! @Floridian FX Ryan, great to see you posting. Since semi-retirement I do not get down that way anymore. I am near Brooksville now if you come up let me know.

My In-laws are still up in Brooksville/Spring Hill area. They have been without power since early last night.

We haven't been up that way much this year, the beginning of the year was a disaster but things have turned the corner so we might try to get up there later this fall/winter. I will let you know for sure!

Is this the same storm that's sitting over the top of me in North Carolina right now? I'm getting absolutely pummeled here. Lots of rain and very high winds. Kinda scary watching those towering pines around me just a whipping in the wind as though they were wheat in a field. The cats are very freaked out. I'm not afraid to admit it makes me anxious too, though I'm glad this last wave hit after daybreak. It's prone to flooding here and I've done a couple practice runs setting up the backup pump and getting the generator running . . . though I've never had to do it under the gun, in a storm, in the dark.

I hope everyone here came through okay. Still picking up tree debris the oaks shed during the storm but other than that we are just fine. We never lost power but many right around us were down for a while.

Sorta looks like North Ga., western Carolinas Northeast Tenn caught this hurricane a lot worse than we did!
Not to mention them getting 60+ deaths!

I have never seen one do so much damage that far inland and in so many states.

I do not understand it and feel like an idiot.
I did not follow storm closely, beyond the predicted coastal surge effect, and not knowing the region well, I am very confused. Rooftop height storm water in N.C.? Deadly, traumatic, so many losses, livelihoods shattered, communities gone.

Perhaps I can help you understand it? Florida is essentially flat while western NC is anything but flat being steep hills & mountains. Florida has tons of sand. while western Carolina is mostly clay & rock. I have 20 acres of Florida with two wells on it. Both wells were nothing but sand for the first 60 feet. Sand can absorb lots of water without flooding, clay & rock cannot. Here we have had 37 inches of rain in less than 24 hours without flooding while Asheville got 10-12 inches of rain in 24 hours causing what they are calling flooding of biblical proportions, This storm was in a hurry to get to the mountains & still had 100 mph winds when it got there. Combine that with the rain they got and many 100+ year old oak trees have their foundations weakened while being blown by 100 mph winds, not good. Add in the fact that we humans tend to build in the valleys and you have a recipe for disaster.

Mickey is correct. Clay and rock subsoil does not absorb the water quickly like the sand does here. You couple that with to topography and all the water collects in the low areas. The flooding was extensive in the valleys right where the small towns are built.

One of my closest friends built a house in Sarasota about a year ago or so. He's already made it down to Miami. A colleague of mine seems like he's going to be hit though too but he already got out as well.

I'm on the Atlantic side just outside of the current tracking cone, and according to the wind field, I should experience no more than tropical force winds. I've got hurricane shutters and ordinarily, I wouldn't bother closing them for that. I haven't been feeling particularly lucky lately so closed they are...
