Did you happen to catch "American Routes" on NPR yesterday evening???
It was one of the better ones I've heard!
The first hour was dedicated to Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, etc.
While the entire second hour was a concert by the zydeco band BeauSoleil celebrating their 50 years together!

If you missed it, it isn't too late! https://www.amroutes.org/august-2024/2435

Late reply... Nope did not catch that.

Beausoleil are respected elders by now.
Note that their music in not Zydeco. Z was "created" by Clifton Chenier, with a more driving bass to get folks to dance. He was an astounding entertainer, check vintage footage!
As explained by a musician: there were "white house music" and "black house music" on porches, dining rooms, and, before the arrival of the accordion, two fiddles, one playing the melody the other the backup.
Cajun music was virtually unknown outside of LA, limited to local dance halls, until a fortuitous booking of Dewey Balfa and band at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival (R.I.). They got a standing ovation that day, and brought back the news that folks outside their area liked the style!
The other farm cats didn’t super love him but the chickens thought he was alright so he became a chicken.

I didn't think it was zydeco but that is what "American Routes" called it & who am I to argue with them?

Some archive audio files are candid conversations, like some here:

Musicians like, before Spotify and Ticketmaster, or is it the same, just under another layer of varnish?

For the folks still following, here is a good history bit about South Louisiana music:

(The Acadiens et Creoles festival is a great, free, three-day outdoor affair, where you get to see local bands that do not travel much, precious in that way)

I was listening to American Routes this weekend when they completely stunned me! They played "Your Cheatin' Heart" by Fats Domino! FATS DOMINO???
Seems Fats was a big Hank Williams fan!
