I was shying away from modelers until started playing around with the little Vox Stomplab multi-effects unit I got a couple of months ago. For 12 year old technology that thing absolutely rocks, even if the interface is something only a step above flipping switches on an old IBM mainframe.
So along comes this video 2 weeks ago where Rob Chapman (love him or hate him..he knows guitars and amps) picked the old Vox VT40 in a blindfold competition against a bunch of other similar wattage SS amps. The VT40X is basically the next generation of the modeling insde the old Stomplab, 10 inch speaker, decent effects and a 12Ax-7 in the preamp section to warm up the tone. I had always been skeptical about the gimmick...but here Rob could hear the difference blindfolded over the other SS amps, including the venerable Katana Mk III.
I have to add this to the list of possibles....and cheap as chips too at $260 here in Bangkok.
Quite Interesting Video : Vox VT40X

You know I was always sceptical of the tube/SS hybrid stuff and thought it was a gimmick. But 2 things changed my mind: 1) this video competition and 2) even more importantly, it seemed that Vox initially developed this hybrid technology on some of the monster pre-super Beatle amps they were providing to the Fab Four for their US 1964 tour. So this was being used way back when and quite successfully at that.
