So...
Conrad Small.jpg
My first guitar was a 60's MIJ Teisco branded as Conrad, and I bought it decades ago in a pawn shop in Fort Morgan, CO for $35. I'm a lefty and never ran into a lefty guitar by that point, so I decided to try learning on this thing with the strings flipped. The bridge being a straight right-angle to the strings, I figured the intonation couldn't get worse. I did learn on it, but it was a nightmare to play. The neck lacks a truss rod, one tuner is missing its ferrule, and of course the intonation. One night, a drunk knocked it over, cracking the neck and that was the end. I didn't want to repair it, even though it was on a couple of recordings.
Pickups Small.jpg
Today I decided I would pull those pickups for a transplant, possibly into a Liquid. I haven't decided whether to use all 3 or just 2 (I prefer 2), but might do the 3 because the Liquid in question is routed for 3. Before you ask, nope, they are not the same size or shape as P90s. I'll have to make a pickguard no matter what they go into. These just look like P90s, but they are smaller, and yet deeper. They do sound P90 like though, and they are unusually heavy. I'm not opening them up to see why, but I would guess it's the thick metal covers. When they go into another guitar, they won't be in the same order they came out of the Conrad - the neck pickup is much hotter than the other 2, I'm thinking it wants to be a bridge. Here's how they came out: Neck: 6.58K, Middle: 3.12K, Bridge: 4.24K.

If anyone thinks I'm a monster for parting out an old Teisco, trust me. There are reasons this one was a $35 pawn shop guitar, and I'm doing the pickups a service by mating them with a body and neck worthy of playing. The Teisco made me quit guitar for a very long time. The remainder of the Teisco will hang on the wall as a reminder, and if anyone looks it over in person and offers me too much for the husk, I'll let those parts go. Either way, it's best as a $35 set of pickups instead of a whole unplayable guitar.

Interesting side note. When desoldering the pickups, I noticed a .02 cap wired directly into the bridge hot side. I'm guessing they did that to brighten it (removing lows on the hot side. opposite of how caps are used in tone circuits).

I've got a Teisco neck here, fender shaped headstock, but 24.75 scale i think. Truss rod? Not sure.

That being said, i bought my first electric, Teisco or was it Sekova? $39.99. 2 pickup tulip shape. I always thought they were junk, baseball bat neck, but i learned to play on it and anything else was so easy to play. I still think those Japan 60's 70's guitar are crap but i flip them if someone else wants to fight playing it.

Baseball bat is accurate. Thickest neck I've ever played by far.

It's kind of amazing that as junky as those guitars were overall, the pickups were good enough to salvage and swap into something much better...

Well crap. I see something new every day. I'm pretty gentle when pulling knobs off guitars, and I've never seen this happen before. I guess new pots will be part of the Liquid's upgrades.

I have, a few times but usually on push/pull pots. Speaking of push/pulls, You need to upgrade that SX harness anyway and include a couple of them as even with a custom pickguard, there's really not enough room on a Liquid for four pots.

I'll definitely change the harness as I'm going along. I just did a test fit and found I will need to route a tiny bit to accommodate the pickup mounts, and (very happily) am going to go with a Jazzmaster control plate I think looks great in this context.

One of my early guitars was a random East Asian piece of crap, maybe a Teisco for all I know. I didn't really know anything about guitars at that point, but I found this thing at a flea market and thought it was cool...it was not. I think I ended up leaving it on a street corner somewhere. Too bad: Jack White would probably pay me thousands for that piece of crap now!

It's been a while since this thread had any updates, I was doing other things. But I made a few Liquid pickguards with no pickup holes because I want to set them up however my ears will most appreciate. I need to experiment.
Temporary Mounts.jpg
Am I crazy? Undoubtedly. But mounting these pickups on a temporary open guard will let me test out a bunch of different 2 and 3 pickup wiring options while keeping the neck on and strung up for quick testing. Since these pickups came out of my first guitar, I want to give them their best potential configuration (at least according to my ears). Then I will put pickup holes in just one real pickguard.

Of course if I get hit by a bus in the middle of all this testing, whoever finds this guitar this way will think I couldn't even make a proper pickguard.

Now I can get hit by that bus and not look so dumb. I closed up the first fit and assembly last night. These pickups sound better than they ever did in the Teisco, and now they're in a guitar with great action. I already love playing it. I still need to put a hard finish on the pickguard, but I'm otherwise very happy with it.

Well, it looks spectacular!

Looks very clean. And I´m glad you´re liking the pickups sound. Great job, Steve!

Now I´m starting to like those Liquids a little more after seeing so many of them! And that´s not good!

Anyway, keep enjoying it!

What´s on your mind for the PG finish?

PS: You can now return to your normal street walking  !

Those pickups look at home on that.
Nice going. Did you do any of the math/string length/ vibration nodes,...etc calculation approach...or just ear it ?
I am just curious as to how the string length nodes "stuff" would pan out relative to your hearing it. Even though, with any difference I'd follow the ears more than a calculation. And I have not jumped into any nodal study...though they're probably a '"search" away.

:D Thanks! I think Liquids are among the best bargains out there - really good straight out of the box and awesome mod platforms too. I just want to put a very hard finish on the pickguard for scratch and dent resistance. I will probably pick a varnish intended for flooring. I would like to make the grain more apparent, and I might tint it light green. I still have the sheet I cut it from, and can experiment on that scrap.

Thanks, and I agree it looks appropriate. I didn't do the string math at all. I just mounted them centered where SX mounted 2 of the P90s, so if anyone did the homework, it was the OEM. I agree though, if I was going to try to optimize them, I'd choose doing it by ear. That conjures up a contraption for mounting pickups on sliding rails. I've thought about that before, but not enough to execute it.

This was pretty much what I was thinking for the pickguard finish. I didn't care as much whether it turned out seafoam or surf or mint, but wanted some grain to show and for the guard to not look cream colored. I know some just won't like green in this context, but I like it. It was stain first, sand, sanding sealer, sand, then 3 coats of poly with sanding between and finally made satin with 1500 grit. Too Christmassy?

I like how it looks. It blends well with the color of the body.

Looks "Christmassy" in a nice and subtle way; subtle enough to play it the year long, because it also looks like itself. That´s its looks.

Congrats on a finished project!
