@tlarson58 You strated your thread with "I´m a bigger guy than I should be".

I will say I´m a smaller guy than I should be haha!

I´m 55 now, I´m 5'57" and I weight in at 138 lbs. I would have wanted to be 6'1" and 170 lbs.

But I am what I am, haha.

Having said that, I´ve been on and off on exercising for my whole life, but this year I started with more discipline - my wife also -, not only exercising, but also trying to eat less unhealthy things - less bread, less fried food, less sugar and less sweet things, basically -. We don´t go to restaurants or fast food places often - don´t need to tell you why -, but the easier foods to have are bread, fried food and sugared things, so we put a limit on that.

The results have been impressive. It´s not that I was overweight, but I wasn´t "toned".

(As a tangent story, back in the dark years here, 2016-2018, when there was shortage of food and I had to sell my car and bla, bla, bla, I started walking more, like way more than I used to, and, despite the feelings and situations I don´t want to live again, the result of eating less bread and sugar and other things, and the fact that I walked more, was that I lost weight in a significant way, so, there you have it, less bread and sugar and fried food and you´re good to go, along with walking and exercising).

Let´s continue.

I´m in better shape now, and feeling generally better - sleeping better, which is a big thing -.

I do some weights at home with a pair of Dumbbells - 11 lbs each -, and also work with my body weight. We also walk at least 4 times a week, usually 5-6 days/week.

Really, it´s not about becoming a bodybuilder, it´s about feeling better, and hoping that the good physical condition will help in our older years.

So, if you don´t have any serious impediment, do yourself a favor and do some exercise, have some activity in your life.

I've got an elaborate workout program that I have been committed to starting tomorrow for the last four years. In the meantime, I manage to go up and down the stairs about twenty times a day because the snacks are in the kitchen and my office is on the second floor.

It kills me because of my back but I manage to walk about a mile around my neighborhood five days a week. I can manage without it, but it's a bit less painful so I have a long wooden walking staff. One of my smart-ass neighbors calls me Father Time...

You do love to ski ? I think you telemark? I swear if you get/borrow some junk-gear and xc skate ski, you'll realize its way more fun than you think, .....with the gliding, and being on a groomed xc trail thru the woods, in the mountains, etc.
And like jogging, it just takes a few weeks until you feel the body wanting to get back out there.

My local area will likely open within a week. And my coworkers know that even on a work day I'll be leaving early to go get some.

Its best to start on a flat trail and go super slow for a few weeks, to get basic technique and find the "easy does it" feel of stride from side to side. Its a balance finding, too, and your lungs need to open up like after the first weeks of jogging/running. Each stride side to side has a glide section at the end, and body should be more or less balanced on one foot with chin and knee over that foot, then to the other side.

Theres lots of good beginner stride vids on yutube. At first you just get the easiest stride for flats. Ultimately there are 3-4 strides that are a bit different to suit varying inclines and speeds. They become natural changes like changing gears on a bike. FYI, Canadians and US folk seem to use 2 different sets of names for the strides, but they are the same things going on.

If theres no dog trails, you should still do it. Many people get hooked on this sport cause the body feels so fully exercised, and its so calming in the woods in winter. And downhill sections, being about 1/2 the time, are exciting cause your on such skinny skis.
Its a sport folks can do into late age as its not an impact on the joints sport (like alpine), its just pushing away ones own body weight with all limbs, heart and lungs.

Thank you for this. All good stuff. I've made a phone call to a friend who might have some gear for me to try out. All we need now is snow (and there's some coming this weekend).

You´d look more like the Godfather, I think, walking with the wooden staff aroud your domains - and if you happen to have Brando´s voice, then you´re The Godfather! -.

Now seriously, I´m sorry about your back problem.

I forgot to mention in my post that I do have to be careful with my back, my knees and my shoulders; there are certain postures and angles that I can't do when exercising, or whatever it is I am doing.

I have a stationary bike, a regular bike and as of yesterday I have an electric bike. I know what you are thinking, how can that be exercise. Well my small neighborhood is called Mountain View. Unlike Colorado our mountains in Florida are just rolling hills. The hills I live in are at an elevation of about 350'. Basically a big square with two legs out to the main road. It is flat across the top and bottom but a nice grade on the other two sides steep enough to make biking tough on an old guy. The e-bike provides some assistance on the hill making it seem flat too. I just turn it on and off as necessary. I live right in the middle of the hill. Now I can get out there and ride in the winter when the weather is nice like today. In the summer it is too hot to ride a bike outside.

Just pedaling burns calories. I had a friend lose a bunch of weight when he got his e-bike from doing that. Until then, getting outside and doing something was almost impossible because of his knee.
