So... we bought a new car: A 2023 Subaru Forester Wilderness It's a jacked-up, tougher version of the standard Forester mommy mobile.
Subarus are the car of choice for median-level incomes here in town.
I've never had a new car and it's an odd feeling: Do I deserve something this nice? Is it worth the strain on our budget? 'Not sure, but the trigger has been pulled and we have a nice, tough and dependable car that can handle the some intense driving conditions.
The jury's out on the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
We dorve up to Rabbit Ears Pass (elevation 10,000 ft) today to noodle around on some bumpy roads. As advertised, it handled some pretty rough spots with ease. Finn is well-behaved because Big Momma has a tennis ball in her hand.
So this happened (new car content)
Nice new wheels! And I know what you mean about that feeling of "do I deserve a new car?" - I've been fighting the car buying bug lately...I keep telling myself interest rates are too high, cars cost too much, blah blah blah. I'm still driving my 2006 Toyota Tacoma. And its fine...she doesn't look like much anymore, clear coat's coming off, paint is fading, etc, but she's only got 71,000 miles, and runs perfect. Only major issue is MPG. Which is about 15. In California. Gas costs a lot here, so that part sucks. But no payment is pretty sweet too...

Nice ride Tommy! Congrats and I am sure your wife and Finn deserve a new car. There is room in one of those for all the band gear too!

Congrats. A new car for me isn't likely (part Estonian, part Scottish, all cheap), but you do deserve it.
The best part is it's never been owned by anyone else, so you control the maintenance and records keeping.
Drive it until it explodes in a cloud of rust and failed electronics around you!

I'll only buy Subarus and Toyotas, as i have great experience with both. I think Subies are 1/3 Toyota anyway.
My wife has a2019 RAV4 Hybrid and I have a 2017 Prius Hybrid, both with CVT and electronic steering (versus traditional mechanical). I really like the CVT, but miss the feel of the feedback from the road that you get in mechanical steering. It is 'simulated' but it doesn't feel the same.

My old car was a 2003 Rav4. The engine was still good at 170k but the car was falling to pieces around it.Rollin Hand wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 11:38 am Congrats. A new car for me isn't likely (part Estonian, part Scottish, all cheap), but you do deserve it.

Oh yeah, that's Toyota's in a nutshell. The engine never dies if you keep feeding it new oil. My son drives a 2005 Corolla that has 230,000 miles on it. Engine just purrs along, body may come apart at any time lol.

I got 250K out of Toyota Sienna van and, when the dealer gave me $1000.00 for it when I traded it in, it still ran great. That thing got me to and from many gigs loaded down to the max.

Congrats, looks like a sweet ride, perfect for Colorado.
My buddy is a huge fan of them and has a real nice Legacy sedan.
Subaru is one of those companies that still does things uniquely and I respect them for it.
Too bad there won't be anything truly unique about cars before too long. Sad will be the day the last Boxer engine purrs under the hood of a Subaru

I like Subaru, and I´ve read good things about their cars.

"Mommy Mobile"?!! I'm on my second Forester and I think I am manly enough! But, I get what you are saying coz that's my family says too. Haha! I love Subarus coz they're reliable throughout the 4 seasons. My first Forester went with my son to college. He has a WRX now.

"Mommy Mobile" was a tounge-in-cheek comment. Our work fleet is all Foresters and I tool around in a well-kept 2012. Mommy mobile indeed!littlebadboy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 7:17 pm"Mommy Mobile"?!! It was all that I could do to get the dealers to strip the car of their stickers and badges (there were lots of them). I'm gonna pass on the ownership/lifestyle icons for now.

Awesome - you mentioned you were looking for this exact thing so I hope it lives up to the expectations! I know the feeling about the new car too - my current truck is the first brand new vehicle I have ever owned for myself. And no matter how good a deal you get, I always get that feeling as I"m driving away from the dealer that the sales guys are all standing around the water cooler joking about how bad they took me to the cleaners
I am sure you did your due diligence and research, and it's no like you dropped 100K on Escalade - so enjoy the new car smell and peace of mind knowing you will have a dependable vehicle that is also very capable and pretty cool looking to boot!
