My mom always played piano and could sing very well (and loud!).
Then there was my dad. A while after my mom died, Dad said to me "You know, I think I'll tey aying the saxophone again."
"Again?" I responded. I had no idea that he played ANYTHING let alone saxophone. But apparently, he would play, and my mom would listen.
I also found an old black and white picture of a big band playing. I could not for the life of me figure out why my folks had it. I stared at it for a while before I realised my dad was in the band.
Playing guitar.
I brought the picture to him.and asked why he never told me. "Ah, it never came up."
My recently departed uncle played saxophone as well, and two of my cousins were in bands back in the 70s.
Are you the only proficient musician in your close family?

That´s good, Chris! Two crazy musicians is good for a family (you and your brother). Your mother and grandpa are the foundation ground!Partscaster wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 8:41 pm I have an older brother who played guitar in early teens and went on to graduate from Berkley Music and he still plays out around Boston area. He definitely influenced me to pick it up in my early teens. He's the only other avid musician/geek in the family...although our mother did play some guitar, grand father played banjo. I dont think they played super often, but regularly enough as a hobby for years.

Good to hear that several members of your family play/played some instruments!glasshand wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 10:25 am My mom is actually a reasonably proficient classical pianist (or would be if she practiced, anyway but her sight-reading has always been miles beyond mine). But my family is so small that that's about it. Interestingly enough, I only discovered after my wife's grandparents had both passed away that they were really into music - when we were cleaning out the house, we found a trombone, a 1960s Silvertone acoustic guitar still in the original cardboard box, and an autoharp, among other things. My nephew, who plays guitar a bit, got the Silvertone.

Well this is a very nice family story. I think it´s great to have other musicians in the family, past or recent.Rollin Hand wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 1:03 pm My mom always played piano and could sing very well (and loud!).

My Pappaw (mom’s dad) played before I was born, he kinda quit at some point but sometimes you can get him to play a lick if you hand him a guitar.
Mammaw (mom’s mom) sang on WLJC semi-often, when her friend Margaret would invite/convince her.
That’s it for my Moms side, and idfk about dads side, I’ve heard he played drums in the 70s or early 80s, but he was about as present oxygen on the moon and lied constantly, so I don’t know to what extent if it’s even true.
I’m definitely the most musically committed member of my immediate family.
