I recently saw an interview with the guitar player in the clip below(not Marty, the other guy) where he was talking about this performance.
At rehersal, guys from Letterman's band came over and were asking, "Where are your pedals?" but they had none, so the question became
"How do you get that sound?" To which they replied "Uh, guitar-cord-amp." Just a matter of choosing the the right guitar & the right amp.
Marty was playing into his favorite (pre-CBS) Fender Deluxe Reverb while the other guy was playing into his (pre-CBS) Princeton.

Wish I could find the interview but I can't seem to find it at the moment. Should I find it later I'll edit this to include it.
Oh, and the tune was written by Don Reno of banjo playing fame.

Found it! Here is the Kenny Vaughan interview!

I watch Marty and Kenny Vaughan playing with The Fabulous Superlatives all the time on reruns of their TV show. Many times I have marveled at the exemplary tone of their Teles through those Fender amps. It's heaven to the ears: spanky, throaty, sparking and shimmery, singing . . . by any measure fabulously superlative.

Great find Mickey- you won’t find many guitar playin’ coyote tricksters like these two. Tone for miles and miles.

If memory serves......the tele Marty was playing is the one that used to belong to Clarence White and has the first ever B-bender installed in it.
I believe it was given to Marty by a member of Clarence's family. But I could be wrong, of course. :D

We all get can get caught up in the gear, when realistically it isn't necessary. I have a couple of cheap pedals and an EVH Phaser, but I don't use them. I just like to plug in and go.

And Marty and Kenny sound great there. Country isn't always my thing, but a lot of those guys can flat out rip, and these guys clearly can.

Not wrong Mickey - that’s Clarence’s B Bender or I’ll eat my hat. I’m glad it found its way into Marty’s talented hands.

Thinking about this has reminded me of something from my time living in Nashville.
In case you weren't aware, Marty is a really nice guy who never got "uppity" with fame and fortune.
Some years ago, I heard him tell a story that might (or might not) be of interest to you.
Whenever he is in town, he usually has breakfast at a favorite Waffle House of his (which is NOT in one of Nashville's better areas.)
But for whatever reason he like's it & they know him, including the regular customers at that time of day.
One of those regulars was a wino for whom Marty often bought coffee, breakfast or whatever. The wino was a huge Marty Robbins fan.
WSM radio ran a billboard ad campaign "Country Music From Marty to Marty" with billboards all over town with pictures of Marty Robbins & Marty Stuart.
The next time Marty went to the Waffle House for breakfast, the wino was in there. When Marty walked in the wino shouted "You ain't shit! You know that don't you?"
Marty sat down beside him, bought him a cup of coffee & asked what was the problem? To which the wino replied "You got some balls, you know that?"
"You don't deserve having your picture up there with Marty's!"
Marty said that living in Nashville keeps you humble. :D

Been listening to Kenny Vaughn interviews due to this thread. Thanks Mickey!

Nashville sidemen are a unique breed. Some of the best players in the world on whatever instrument they play but without the ego of many famous players with half their talent. :)
