There are some nasty suprise interactions with file type attributions/file thumbnails/"Photos"/OneDrive.

A mishmash of minor problems that should not happen:
The JPG file type is not available in the file attribution list, but "Photos" owns it. Tough assigning JPG to another viewer. It took me a while to set irfanView as default... but:
Photos want to index all your pics, and copy them to OnDrive by default, or by new user not paying attention. After that one has to turn OneDrive off, but that seems to kill the large-size file thumbnails ("medium " works somehow -why?)

Many folks with folders and folders of artwork are navigating the various settings, like me with spouse's new machine with 1000s of quilt pictures! (as in, I am in deep do-do if I don't fix!').

I suppose the thumbnail cache can be rebuilt, but as fragile this stuff is, I need to read more on it, run Task manager and whatnot. F that.

This is nonsense, having to spend all this time to restore what was a perfectly good, basic functionality.

Man, Microsoft just doesn't get it. People just want an OS that works. No funny stuff, no Internet based functionality, just works.

Now I gotta make sure no one in the house upgrades by accident or otherwise, as I'll have to deal with that hell. Makes me glad I switched to Ubuntu years and years ago...

So, where are you on the "its time to start over with Win10" scale?

Yes, my thinking exactly.

I hear there is a short window of time to downgrade, but I expect it to be painful...

I think modern tech should just offer "long menus" and "short menus" options
,, so folks who do not want or need the boatload can function in the simpler mode. The idea was implemented in the early versions of Word, was a pleasure to use (simple memo, no need for thesaurus!), don't know why it did not live on?

I've no problems with 11 but then again I'm on a domain...at work...
In fact, maybe that's the key...
When you install....dont created Microsoft account,...Click that you';re on a domain.
That will give you the chance to create local user not tied to MS....

Yeah, you may be on something there, The MS account kicks in all kinds of side processes. some unwanted. Rule number one of software development: give product to a child or grand-ma, and see how they navigate or operate. Flaws will pop up.

Win 11 in itself seems OK, it is just that pesky thumbnail issue, ruining my day.

After more reading, it looks like there are, uh, about six or seven places in the UI where you can toggle the thumbnail view. A case of too many options. If this machine was mine and also not a brand-new machine, it would go straight to Linux - if the hardware/BIOS lock thingie can be bypassed.

I text-chatted with a MS support person. First suggestion: enter come commands in terminal to rebuilding {whatever}. Great way to funk something up,. No need for MS, I can do that with my Linux machine(s) AND can find fix via user forums!

I can't upgrade my one Windows machine to Windows 11. It's because it doesn't have TPM 2.0: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_Platform_Module.
I'll have to eventually move it to Linux, which is what I suggest anyone else to if they have the same issue.

I'm sure someone here will say they've never used Linux, but in reality they're probably already using Linux at least indirectly every day.
Linux runs most of the internet (e.g., servers, cloud infrastructure).
Linux has dominating high performance and super computing for my entire adult life. So most of the modern science and engineering you rely on everyday in this technological world, has been in some way been touched by Linux.
But... it's not really the best choice if you're a gamer. I'll absolutely give you that.

You actually can bypass that check even on a new install. I'm running a 4690k Devil Canyon on a non TPM 2.0 ASUS Pro4 for my recording PC. Was able to install it without issues.

Here's a website that explains

I used this to get my right click context menu back

Yeah, for general use, almost any Linux distro is fine. I tend to be a Ubuntu person, as that's what I'm used to now, both at work and home, but before that I was a Redhat/Fedora user. I keep Win10 around via dual boot for gaming, and I've got it really locked down.

MS is missing an entire market of people who don't want their crappy internet based OS. Go back to your money maker, MS - release a stripped down version of Win10 or 11, and sell the shite outta that thing...

I had to use my wife's Windows 11 machine yesterday. I am having trouble talking about the experience because the welcome page of this forum says "By posting on this forum you agree to use language that would be acceptable to your Mother."

Suffice it to say that any exposure to Windows causes me to use un-mother-appropriate language. I haven't used Windows by choice in over a decade - I'm a Mac and Linux guy. Windows has never been enjoyable, but in the last few years it seems like MS has really doubled down on the whole "let's make the whole OS transparently a way to sell stuff to the user" thing.

I like MS... my favorite OS was Win2K and Win8. Win11 is good, but after some modification.

I also have one computer that running Ubuntu and will dual boot Win11/Hackintosh on my "recording" PC. I also have a 2010 MacBook that is slow AF I removed MacOS and installed the last version of Ubuntu 32 bit.

Wasnt win 2k outstanding? I remember everyone telling me they needed gigs of ram and a quad core to get work done and at thectime i had something very old maybe a gig of ram and i was downloading dozen of streams of gigs of data, watchingband recording tv and burning disks while transcoding a dvd or 2. I used it well into the win 8 era.

I was wondering wtf happened to the photo editing screen. If something's not broke, don't tinker with it.
