Hopefully this too goes to 11. The premise looks good (a contractual obligation concert), and the fact that Rob Reiner is directing fills me with hope and makes me deel like a preserved moose.

I have zero faith that a woke old Rob Reiner can deliver a Spinal Tap movie that I'm remotely interested in. I couldn't possibly endure being propagandized and preached to for two hours by a script that is similar to the editorial slant of Blabbermouth.

2) You're implying that there's a script. These films are improv -- they are given a premise, and they improvise around it.

What I'm saying is that the type of satirical comedy represented but the original 1984 Spinal Tap film is dead. It represented a tradition of bawdy, ribald, no holds barred theater going back to Greek plays, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Mel Brooks, and beyond.Rollin Hand wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 8:58 am1) Cid, is that you?toomanycats wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 7:28 am I have zero faith that a woke old Rob Reiner can deliver a Spinal Tap movie that I'm remotely interested in. The original Spinal Tap film satirized and made fun of homosexuals (the hotel clerk, room service guy, and Marty Fufkin), misogyny, and contained antisemitic humor (“I prise the rent out of the local Hebrews”). Whether you're offended by these views or not, the point is that the creators had the free space known as "art" in which to express them.
I'm not interested in improvisation in fetters. I'm interested in the free expression of ideas, whether I disagree with them or not. I want to anticipate being offended. I want my sensibilities challenged.
Do you not enjoy art, music, and literature like this? In my mind they are synonymous with a free and open society. The opposite is "State sanctioned" humor, consisting only of subjects that aren't taboo, offensive, or politically incorrect.
This does not imply anything political or ideological about me, other than that my position regarding freedom of expression has been the mainstream of Western thought since the Enlightenment.

Sequels rarely do the originals justice, but I'll hold out hope this one delivers. Long time waiting.

Oh please. People that complain about "woke-ism" are too sensitive, getting all bent out of shape because someone got offended. They should just lighten up.
Remember, the Jews who made that movies in the first place agreed to use those jokes. And they were NOT the core of the movie any more than "Mime is money" was. The movie satirised hard rock bands, sometimes using real happenings (Tom Petty getting lost on the way to the stage, Black Sabbath's 18 metre Stonehenge, Uriah Heep getting booked at a miltary facility) to make fun of the ridiculousness and sheer stupidity of some bands.

I think Reiner is batshit crazy too but I don't see much if any woke politics coming from the other 3 guys. I have a feeling based on Christoper Guests movies after Tap, he and McKean and Shearer were behind 99% of the humor in Spinal Tap.toomanycats wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 7:28 am I have zero faith that a woke old Rob Reiner can deliver a Spinal Tap movie that I'm remotely interested in. Guest has a very woke wife though, Jamie Lee Curtis. I remember she tried to blame the bomb alarm in Hawaii that went off by accident on Trump.
Either way, Tap is my favorite movie and I hope it doesn't fall flat.

Spinal Tap is one of my favorite movies too. I recently discovered a lot of the extended outtakes on YouTube and they blew my mind, especially the scene with Bruno Kirby as the limo driver smoking weed with the band in their hotel room, stripping down to his underwear, and singing a Sinatra song.Buddha Pickups wrote: ↑Sun May 15, 2022 10:26 amI think Reiner is batshit crazy too but I don't see much if any woke politics coming from the other 3 guys. ^ To me, this scene gave added context to the scene in the limo where they ignored him. It just made the limo scene more complete.
But skewering aging rockers would seem to be a very rich source for humour.
"Nigel, can we go lower? Me voice isn't right today."
"How bout we play normally, but you take some helium?"
