Was sure where to put this.....

I will preface this with the fact that I have not tried this thing yet...

After waffling for a few days (and annoying some of you as well, I am sure) on what modeler to get, I asked myself a simple question and pulled the trigger on a HX Stomp XL from Long and McQuade.

It arrived yesterday. I let it warm up in the house for a day, and then set about trying to download the software and latest firmware over lunch today.

The simple question I asked: will that used Helix LT fit on my desk? No, it won't. But the HX Stomp XL?

Bingo.

It scared me a little when I opened it. Never have the consequences of my actions been so clearly spelled out:

The box itself is heavier than I expected, and feels quite solid. The switches also seem sturdy.

As well, the user interface seems pretty good, though futzing is so far much easier using HX Edit. I'll have to see how making presets works away from the computer by...well, by futzing. I am hoping to develop some usable presets of my own to act as sort of basic stock sounds that I can use.

Anyway, I am now registered, and I downloaded some user presets from the community: The Brown Sound, a Baluchitherium preset (wet, dry, wet, baby!), a John Sykes preset, a Dokken one, a Rockman X100 (!) and Back in Black (what, no Black album?) I hope to get a chance to try them over lunch tomorrow. I will report back on my successes and failures.

Get on with it man! How can you be that patient as to not at least crank the thing up a little? :-)

Nice! When is the first test with your drummer buddy scheduled to take place?

Likely this weekend. I haven't had the chance to futz with the thing much yet, so I guess I need to figure out how to do presets on the fly. I am anxious to hear it through headphones to get a good idea of the quality of the sounds.

Took my first crack at the thing....I have a lot to learn. Some of the presets I downloaded are not even close (to my ears) and lots of level variation. I am going to have to hook it back up to the computer and futz some more for sure.

For example the AC/DC preset I downloaded was way, way off. So, I made the amp a Plexi, dimed the whole thing, and there it was.

But the stuff that sounds good? Man, oh man, it sounds good. The Brown Sound preset sounds like the end of the world. Loving it so far.

I have to see if I can build myself a Vito/Pride preset.
