Okay, follow me here. I'm been thinking about the evolution of rock guitar from it's inception through the late 80s/early 90s.

The Broadcaster (a Telecaster by any other name) was introduced in 1950. Two pickups, the bridge having more "beef" than the neck. It can project muscular power from the bridge, but can also get glassy, or warm and jazzy in the neck position.

The Fender Stratocaster is introduced in 1954. Arguably more "sophisticated" than the Tele, is does have three pickups and a tremolo system.

In the 70s people start putting humbuckers in the bridge position of Strats. We know the usual suspects, of course Eddie Van Halen, but also "Fast" Eddie Clarke of Motorhead, Wayne Kramer of MC5, and many others who had the same idea.

In the 80s many players decided they wanted a guitar that, "Can project muscular power from the bridge, but can also get glassy, or warm and jazzy in the neck position." Sound familiar? Builders oblige them and so is born the HS Strat.

And so in this round about way I've reach the conclusion of my argument, which is, stated specifically, the story of the evolvement of the rock guitar starts and ends with the Tele. Or at least a guitar that is essentially like the design concept of the Tele, lightweight, with a bolt on neck, powerful bridge pickup, and a weaker neck pickup capable of both pristine cleans and smoky blues tones.

Yes, I know I'm ignoring the HSH Strat, which could be seen as an even further evolvement. But I'm putting lots of stock on the ultimately useful simplicity of the two pickup design, along with the pleasure I get from the aesthetic concept of circularity.

Am I crazy, or am I onto something? I know there's no shortage of Tele love here.

Not crazy, I've felt the same. Tele is the granddaddy of rock. Gibson fits in-between as well...

Broadcaster single pup
Telecaster dual pup
Les Paul p90s
Les Paul humbuckers
Les Paul becomes Fender-like, lighter thinner body with double cutaway SG
And then you get the humbuckers in the Fender style

Just pulled my '69 Thinline Reissue out to play, yesterday. A good Telly is like being naked: good or bad - it all hangs out.

It really is!

All my other guitars with their humbuckers are extremely forgiving. Flub it a bit, still sounds fine.

But I wish my Tele were wired up for that reason. You're going to hear exactly everything you do - or don't - play.

I spend plenty of time with teles, but I can't say they're my favorites, or even the basis of rock and roll. They get there, they are elegant, but there are so many more tones they can't do, and frankly it's not the most comfortable shape. They're great, but they're far from "the thing".

I mean a Tele can't do Strato-quack or Humbucker tones, but that's beside the point.

Musically there's nothing a straight vintage SS Telecaster can't do. Even with the single coils they'll do hard rock or even metal no problem, provided you got the amp/rig for it.

He who has ears, let him hear.

Generally, I like to speak from experience. :)

An SG sounds like a guitar.
A Tele sounds like a guitar.
Tit for tat.

A soccer ball rolls straight when you kick it.
A football does not.
It's a strawman and or tu quoque fallacy.

Anyway having played Teles for metal and loved them, they're also great for easier mixing. They don't crowd the bass like humbuckers do, and yet they're so spicy they cut through.

We all have experience (and ears). Trying to assert otherwise is ignorant.

Maybe TDPRI would be a better place to take it.

How many years of experience do you have using Teles for rock and metal?

Confronted with proof, why attack the man instead of the argument?

Can you refute the video evidence of why Teles fit metal well?

"Everyone needs a tele in their quiver." Often stated because it's correct. Can't do everything but does some things really well.

I have plenty of experience using teles and many other types in rock. I don't do metal, so I don''t care about that.

The OP wasn't even about metal, so why are you trying to make it specifically so? Seems like you're just trying to have arguments.

Rock covers tons of sub-genres and there's a lot in there that a tele just doesn't cover as well as some other guitars.

Cool, mate.

Is plenty a number?

You don't do metal, but you can speak to what does or doesn't work for metal?

The OP showed how 80s metal guitarists explicitly relate to Tele history.

By agreeing with the OP, I am arguing?

Are your statements objective or subjective?

Can you share objective proof of your claims?

How could I be trying to start arguments by agreeing with the OP?
If you actually read his words, you'd know he was saying rock, not just metal.
PsychoCid wrote: Sun Mar 06, 2022 10:15 pm Your last statement is subjective, not objective.

Guitars, and music, have lots of flavors. I'd welcome some objective proof of what you're claiming tho.
The existence of many other models is objective proof the tele was not the end of guitar evolution. It's click-baity, but not compelling enough to chase after evidence to satisfy your needs. This is a discussion forum. Discuss.

When did I say the Tele was the end of evolution?

Whatever you say isn't metal, isn't metal.

First you said don't discuss here. Now you're saying let's discuss?

Thanks for agreeing with me about subjectiveness.

But why are you a pedophile chasing after my sisters?

Is your name Steve Hitch?

Thank you, Senor Pedophile. :)

Thanks for objectively proving why Teles can't do rock or metal, instead of expressing sexual attraction to people's young sisters.

We understand you're a pedophile. You're not going to chase, but you're still replying?

I've given your IP and name to the local PD. I take you quite seriously. You're not a troll once you target my sisters.

But how come you couldn't stay on topic about what Teles can't and can't do?

Let's keep playing. It gets easier.

I really appreciate how a single one of your posts showed how Teles don't work for rock.

I don't enjoy engaging trolls, so I ignore most of what you say. But if your ears fail to get all the nuances players get out of other guitars IN ROCK that teles don't match, that's on you. I'm happy knowing which guitars to consider for any given situation.
