Anybody smoke a pipe?

I've got a small collection but really it's just the Merchant Service Bing Crosby style pipes that I love the most.

The Captain Black stuff is the most available around here but I've had some nice house blends too.

For those who don't partake, I figured I'd throw in another category...how 'bout drinkin'??

My favorites are...

Suntory Toki Whisky (on the rocks)
Prairie Organic Gin (I'm a martini fanatic)
And St George -or- Mt Defiance Absinthe (no sugar)

What floats your boat?

Me and smoke don't get along. Made it tough gigging for 2 decades in local bars, which most allowed indoor smoking.

My favorite adult beverage is IPAs, but I am sworn off except special occasions due to the carbs. Two fingers of Knob Creek with two or three ice cubes is my GOAT. I occasionally have a vodka martini, up, and occasionally a hard seltzer (again - avoiding the carbs).

Have you tried a Rat Pack Martini? (1 part gin - 2 parts vodka - 0.3 parts dry vermouth - olive or twist)

I believe I've had Suntory Toki over my son's house and it was quite good. Japanese, correct?

The only thing I've smoke has been weed, the last time was '86. Had a few cigars here and there, but always turn green and come close to spewing. My drink is Stouts/Porters when I do have one. I also like Vodka.

Hehehe yeah I steer clear of the beer for the same reason.

Haven't done the rat pack but surprisingly the James Bond vesper does work well.

2oz gin, 1/2oz vodka, 1/4oz lillet Blanc

Otherwise my standard martini is JUST enough vermouth to coat the glass (so, barely any), then 1.5oz gin.

When I order a martini at a bar, and they ask what kind of vodka, I reply "No, I said a Martini." until they figure out it should be gin. :)

Also I loved the green olives for years but now I'm partial to the lemon twist. Cocktail onions did NOT work, sadly.

Heh in my early 20s people started calling me Grandpa because I'd already learned everything old was better.

They were always like that's so dumb, new technology is always best!

Point in case...my 1989 Sega Genesis and Nintendo Game Boy still work. My 2006 PS3 died. IT JUST AINT THE SAME!

Yeah I'd only tried cigars a couple times before and really didn't get it.

But this last year I really fell in love with them. Expensive hobby though, so I stick with the pipe.

My father smoked a pipe but never cared for all the fiddle-farting you have to do with them.
So he found a cigar that he liked & was the correct size to fit in the bowl of his pipe.
He would clean out the bowl, stick the cigar in as far as possible, slice the cigar off even with the top of the bowl using his pocket knife.
Then smoke it like that. :D
The remainder of the cigar went into his shirt pocket for when he next wanted a smoke.
Thanks for the memory.

No smoke for me, same reason as Andrewsrea posted above.

I'm mainly a beer snob these days, drinking craft beer and brewing my own beer as well. IPA styles are a current favorite, but I also like ESB's, and Irish Reds.

Oh, and a good Scotch is a fine thing as well, especially if I can find something older than around 15 years.

I do not smoke. I did not drink adult beverages from 2001 until May of 2020. During the time of abstinence I swore I would start back once I retired. Once I knew I was semi-retiring in June of 2020 I started to practice and experiment with different adult beverages. Interestingly enough the two beers I prefer now are the same two I left off with in 2001, Yuengling and Amberbock. I drank whiskey when I was a young man but came to dislike it in the 80's. I have not tried it since starting back but I am intrigued by all the designer whiskies out there and the popularity the genre enjoys. I like beer mostly with food but occasionally drink one or two at the golf club because they do not have a liquor license. My go to is vodka and tonic with lime. I can do gin as well but prefer a good vodka. Tito's, Deep Eddy, Dixie, Crystal or even Sky will do nicely. I buy a bottle of Grey Goose from time to time but honestly I lean towards Dixie the most. Tons of US distilled vodka out there these days and I enjoy trying them out. Since starting back I have not drank enough at one time to have a hangover. I usually have two of three and call it a night.

I got into smoking pipe when I was in my twenties but it was a very occasional indulgence. It faded quickly and over a decade later I got into occasional cigar smoking. In the past 6+ years I can’t remember having smoked a single cigar. I think the last year was when I met frankenfretter (Sean) in my neck of the woods. I still have a bunch in a humidor but my smoking days have really waned and I prefer not to smoke around my son at all. Being a stay at home dad keeps me from bad habits .

Drinks are definitely a simple affair for me personally. I like a beer (any) once in a while. My favorite cheap summer beer is Gennessee grapefruit kolsch. It’s cheap and tasty. Scotch, whiskey, slivovitz, with or without ice is a good relaxer. I’ve had sun tori and enjoyed it also! Good stuff. I’ve had other Japanese whiskey and been impressed.

On the fancy side,my wife loves cosmopolitans after a hard week of work and I make them as good as any expensive bar. Fresh juices, simple syrup and top shelf liquor, with a twist. I used to bartend and regarding martinis, some of the customers I had were very specific about the vermouth. It’s an art as much as a science (mixology). I always listened closely to how people likes their drinks.

Ah very cool. It took me years to figure out how I like martinis.

I kept trying to go by the book and it was always too strong and the flavor was off.

Even at bars, probably only 20% of martinis are any good.

Eventually I figured out my mix is minimal vermouth, freezer stored vodka for that thick viscous feel, and plenty of ice dilution to smooth it out.

If it's not properly diluted or super cold, the gin is much rougher going down.
