A few months ago I got the parts together to make a crude copy of a Luxxtone guitar that I fell in love with (but didn’t want to pay $3k for). My friend affectionately calls it the coffee table strat.

I have a younger family member who absolutely loves the look. So I decided to have one made for him for Christmas. While not quite done in time I’m hoping to present him with it next week.

The body is sapele - which is a great tone wood albeit heavy. Neck is an sj customs, this is my second neck from them and very happy. Pickups were custom wound by Tim from Buddha pickups (and really bring the guitar to life). I can’t thank Tim enough. Will be going to him for all of my pickup needs moving forward.

BIG time plug for the guy that made the body from scratch, got the neck to be perfect, and put everything together- Brian Kirkner. Anyone in central NJ should look him up, he does amazing work.

Very nice.

I’ve never seen sapele before, that looks damn fine for a guitar body, like something Alembic would use.

Only thing that was a miss was the knobs. I thought the clear knobs would make the wood visible but they’re just a bit too much.

May just go with black

Martin (and several other acoustic guitar makers) used sapele for a number of years. It is a good replacement for mahogany in that application, but I believe it is on the endangered species (C.I.T.E.S.) list these days making it illegal to buy/sell. It is often called "African Mahogany."
