I continue to suck at guitar.
I still don’t really know the fretboard, and haven’t fully grasped and mastered using the CAGED system (which makes perfect sense to me) despite knowing that it will be one of those moments in my guitar journey… like learning to change cowboy chords fluidly or nailing barre chords.
I’ve been really knuckling down lately, locking in the visualization of (CAGED) chords, pentatonic scales and arpeggios all over the board. It’s coming to me a bit at a time, but I’m having to fight for it every step of the way.
This is it. No more foolin’ around. I’m gonna get this under my damn fingers! I’m starting to get the visualization part down. I can kind of see the scales and arpeggios of upcoming chords laying “under” the one I’m currently playing… that’s progress!
My brain hurts. I’m going to bed. Tomorrow, I’m gonna work on this some more.

Make sure you enjoy it. Find practice methods you enjoy.
Taking a piano course in school helped my guitar. Maybe seeing everything linearly was good.
I liked picking apart my favorite guitarists by ear. having songbooks of groups I knew well helped learn about chord progression and seeing the relative scales at play.
Just make sure you enjoy it, IMO. If you are trudging through it, it might not get as far. Thousands of hours can go by getting better if its enjoyed, it rolls itself along, rather than arduously pushing it.

Why do all the CAGED youtube videos start at C?
Or is that how it works?
What if you want to start at F# or Bb?

@Partscaster I actually enjoy the theory part of things, but I'm a goal oriented kinda guy.... unless it's just a vague goal with no purpose. If I had to play a show on a given date and needed to learn a song, I'd do it. But, I just fall off this because it takes a while to reap the reward (I guess). I'm determined to overcome my natural tendency to be sidetracked by other things this time because I know that being able to visualize this way will elevate my playing in a significant way.
@thepezident , If you wanna start at F#, go ahead... just use a "c-shape" and the corresponding scale and arp, then move to the "a-shape" F# and use that corresponding scale and arp.... etc. Start with the "a-shape" if you like. It's just easy to start at C, since the mnemonic starts with C. The point of CAGED (as I understand it and am using it) is to be able to just see these various chord/scale/arp shapes all up and down the neck so you can quickly and fluidly slide around between them, and most handily play to the chord changes rather than playing using a single scale over all the underlying chords.
I'm beginning to be able to visualize things... now I just have to make my fingers do what my visions see!

Been sucking at Guitar since '88, at least you're visualizing. My retention of chords, scales, etc. is less than a gold fish. For some reason music eludes me like a huge road block in my mind. I can visit a place once and visit years later, still know my way around. But play a song almost daily for a year and forgot it after a few days.
I’m getting there… jamming to simple backing tracks. For example, I’ll have a simple I-IV-V blues progression in A going. I’ll practice using Am and A arp all around the 5th fret, when the underlying chord changes to D, I use D maj arps and scales around the 5th fret as well. Same when underlying chord goes to E.
I really should have pushed through this a long time ago.

It is based on the open chord shapes for A, C, D, E ,and G but ACDEG doesn’t sound cool or memorable as it does when rearranged to CAGED. You can start anywhere but YouTube teachers are probably trying to avoid confusion and starting with C.thepezident wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 8:29 am Why do all the CAGED youtube videos start at C?
