Yo folks,
We are going to order a background band logo banner and also preparing out first full length album and gigs coming up....and we have been thinking it's probably the last good time to change the name of the band.
Right now it's been Auburn Heights.
Doesn't really mean anything, a loose translation of a place name really which isn't that significant in any way. We just liked the way it sounds.
But we have pondered if we should change it to just Auburn. Which would maybe be easier for especially Finns. Although it's that part everyone mispronounces though. They say it like 'Awburn' instead of 'o-burn'. BUT then again just Auburn is a car brand of past etc...
So what say you- Auburn Heights or just Auburn better?

Well apparently there's at least one artist already by the name Auburn so I guess the choice is made.

I'ld loop "Auburn" into something natural , i.e., Auburn Sun, or Isles of Auburn

Maybe pair Auburn with another word? To me Auburn Heights sounds either like the name of one those housing subdivisions that are popping up around here faster that you can blink, or a slick "reality" show about rich people, or a 90s band Nu Metal band. I like the word Auburn, but paired with something that makes it more hard rock/metal.
Auburn Eyes
Dirty Auburn
Auburn Witch
Auburn Axe
. . . or something like that.
Or maybe use a homonym?

Doesn't really mean anything and doesn't google up anything...but kinda sounds like an industrial coating or something.
"The new battle tank is entirely covered with mosfite" like a buddy said.
Other benefits are it is pronounced the same in Finnish and English and it's easy to remember.
The 'fight' part is slightly hinting towards Metal as in Mosh Fight, and that's desirable as it is metal basically, albeit a little on the grunge rock side...
Also it can be a word play on Mossback ie.an old greezer dude - which we are, but still fighting.
And in the same sense, Fighting moss as a Rolling Stone gathers no moss...

I did like auburn heights. shorts to AH. Then again mosfite can go to MF. I say on the 1 hand mosfite is harder to remember because it isnt a real word to tie to where auburn is a car. I might think duesenberg in trying to remember Auburn but I'd know to keep thinking. On the other hand a duck duck go search should hit the name first. (If I remember it Either can be good. But I liked AH better.

OK this is what I have in mind now; Mosfite.

Good for a "Death Cap" Metal band ?
I think you would have difficulty changing the pronunciation for most folks who are familiar with the Auburn Tigersdeeaa wrote:Yo folks,

10 years, 2 months, and 8 days of blissful ignorance ruined by that snake in the grass Major Tom.
Hm...this is pretty difficult. Thanks to all for helping with the pondering, it's very much appreciated.
I guess Auburn Heights is out the window anyway, it's just too difficult apparently for the local population; not only that they don't know how to pronounce it in English - I mean even in the radio they said it something like "owwbjörn heyjgthss" it's just way too difficult. And even our friends just call it Auburn only and never seem to be able to google it, always asking how can you find it online...
But Mosfite is very easy and pronounced the same in Finnish and English...I even asked my students how would they google it if I said it's Mosfite, but no G and they said it's easy to remember and find.
So we're probably going to go with that, it's unique and all...
BUT we're still pondering about maybe adding umlauts.
It might nicely make it remiscent of 80's metal - which we are at the core, and also properly distinguish from Mosrite etc.
And it perhaps gives an air of a band who don't take themselves so-very-seriously, which would be good. Although we don't want people to think it a complete joke either.
Hmm.
What do you think, Mösfite or Mosfite better?

I think from what I've heard in clips you've shared, Mosfite fits your sound better. I actually like Auburn Heights as a band name, but it reminds me of Hawthorn Heights, which is one of those pop-punk/hardcore/metalcore blend bands that was really popular in the states a decade ago (Emo's not dead!). Although the thought of you making Finnish versions of songs like "Ohio is for Lovers" amuses me, you're better off with a name like Mosfite
Side note, you mentioned that Finnish people pronounce "Auburn" as "Aww-burn" instead of "o-burn." That's how people pronounce it here in Wisconsin, USA. Maybe it's different throughout the country. The "O-burn" pronunciation sounds German to me.

If I had something witty to say, I'd put it here.
Yeah, the trouble with Auburn Heights is it's too artsy or light for a basically rock-metal band...plus hard to pronounce. Otherwise I quite like the name. And we started off far more pop oriented than we are now, just doesn't fit so well any more.
My aww example went exact opposite I meant...I mean people say it like o as in Owl, not a as in...automatic etc. Finnish A is so different. It's like in Aardwark...or Ardent. Anyway they say it totally weird, also the U is quite off, but they say heights about correct.
Hard to try to describe, but maybe something like owb-you-urn...you wouldn't even understand what word are they trying to say really. Just too difficult for many.
