Hell yeah! Last night I pulled up to a venue in my 2006 Toyota Corolla and loaded in my hand wired point to point tube amp, my Custom Shop Gibson Les Paul, and a gig bag full of other cork sniffy tone facilitators. I did make $100, plus tips and free beer . . . but otherwise that's me spot on.

Wash, rinse, repeat. It's a lifestyle.

When I was a little kid my Grandpa told me that is a "watch pocket."
So I watched it until I got bored and went off to do something else. :D

On more than a few occasions I've uttered the phrase: "I'm not as good as I oughta be" after telling people how long I've been playing (37 years on bass, 22 years on guitar).

Lol...

I´ve been "playing" for 41 years, but not all those 41 years. I think I had a blank period of about 10 years, maybe a little more. The last five years have been the most productive years in terms of really learning and playing. I still have a long road ahead of me.

So, maybe I am that guy!

And also, "I´m not as good as I oughta be".

Yeah, I've got gaps in my playing years too. I barely played at all when I was self-employed... I didn't even have time for a normal life back then. That was about 6 years gone. And I've had shorter non-playing periods (a year or two) here and there throughout my life, due to my itinerant tendencies and adventure-seeking.

Don't worry... None of us are as good as we ougta be. If we all had the freedom to make music the central focus of our lives since we were in our twenties - like most of the players that we revere and (unfairly) compare ourselves to - then we'd be as good as they are. But for most of us, other obligations and inclinations took priority. We had to find a way to make music fit into our lives, while successful, touring musicians have to find a way to make a life fit into their music career. Who has it worse? Unless you're a musical savant, or a prodigy, you have to sacrifice a lot to get that good. Would you trade your family and all your life experiences to be a virtuoso musician? I wouldn't. I'm not that single-minded. I have other interests and avocations outside of music. Besides, I've gotten a little taste of that life, and I don't think I could maintain that for an extended period of time, anyway. :D
