Toad the wet sprocket was a made up monty python name because they wanted to make sure NO ONE would ever use it. Eric Idle almost drove off the road when he heard a band used that name.

My 90's band was 'The iNbreds', because we played spot-on covers (at one time over 450 songs in our repertoire) ...

Good Lord, at any given gig you could play any one of them on the spot? That's like the old Johnny Carson Show "Stump the Band" segment...

Kind of.

We would do a 25% set change every weekend which meant with exception of a few signature songs, we'd have a completely different set by the end of the month. So if you requested a song and we played it in the last 5 weeks, we'd probably pop it in at the end of that set. If we hadn't played it in a while, we'd talk through it on the break and insert it into the next set. Rarely, we'd turn down a request because it required gear we didn't bring. The only one instance of this I remember clearly was a request for 'Do You Feel Like We Do,' where I hadn't brought my talk box for that gig. Most of the time, we'd do a song anyway, with the occasional train wreck ensuing. I can recall pulling off 'Rocky Mountain Way' w/o the talk box and people seem to enjoy it (but the talk box drove drunks insane when I used it).

We were put to the test around 1994, when we played an invite only birthday party for a bar owner friend of ours. We played from 9 PM to 6 AM, with an hourly 10-15 min break. We didn't intend to play until sunrise, but the place was rocking all night and we were having fun (and drinking more than a typical gig, where we'd keep our head straight as a course of business).

So not as good as 'stump the band', but pretty cool we could keep a big fan base due to variety. Which was really cool, because unlike band gigs today - we musicians of the band would typically make $500 to $1000 playing Thursday - Saturday. And had a sound guy, light guy and a few roadies to boot!
