Do you rely on a pedal or your amp for crunch? (TUBE AMPS - LIVE setting)
My favorite crunch comes straight from my Vox AC10. Then I have quite a few small modelling/hybrid amps that have all kinds of crunchy/overdrive sounds so no need for any pedals for me.

Usually I much preferred my crunch to come from the amp. But if I was using an amp with no effects loop or built-in boost, that raised the question of how I would get a boost for solos. In those situations I would set the amp pretty clean, run a pedal for crunch, and put a boost after it for solos. But doing that seemed to kind of defeat the purpose of having a good tube amp anyway.

I always use the tube amp for primary crunch that can be cleaned up enough using the guitar pot.
Then I use a driver pedal to push the input a bit more to get a slight vol bump and added sustain. I used to use a Boss Blues Driver but recently have replaced it with a EHX Soul Food

For live show I always just let my amp growl but did have a Wah and a Delay on the floor. The studio was a totally different creature I've used all kinds of pedals and multi effects processors.
Speaking of pedals I bought a used Ibanez Tube Screamer off of Reverb 12/7 dude shipped it 12/8 @ 2:42 pm from Manchester, New Hampshire it popped it's head back up on 12/15 @ 12:42 pm at the eastern Maine distribution center (don't know why it went that way I'm in NC) now it just says "In Transit, Arriving Late Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way. It is currently in transit to the next facility."
So what do think should I give it a little more time or just undo the deal? I really want the screamer and it seemed to be in great condition from the pictures and I got for what I believe was a fair price so I hate to see it go bye-bye.

Ii would give it just a little more time. Isn't both the right answer? Amp gain is delicious, but only one flavor of gain. I love Marshall crunch, and while you can get close with pedals, you can't really duplicate it. But I also love my Rat and my TS and all my fuzzes and other dirt boxes. They give me something different. All crunch is good (except when it sounds bad).

It depends on which amp I'm using. With something like my Peavey Classic 30 there's all the built in overdrive I need (and a master volume) to get the classic rock/blues tones I need without pedals at a reasonable volume.
With my 65 Amps London I sometimes need more gain than the amp itself can provide, so I push the front end with a pedal.
I think that the "perfect" amp for the tones I typically need to achieve would be something like a 10 watt Plexi clone driving a 1X12 or 2X12 cab. Anyone know what amp that would be?
