Facebook weirdness. I'm so pissed off.

I know some people don't care for Facebook, and that's cool.
For me, it has been a great boon. Allowing me to reconnect with dozens of old friends from childhood, high school, college, etc, whom I would never have been re-connected with otherwise.
And I have a lot of really witty friends, so the posts are often quite entertaining.
And I live alone, socially-distanced, so Facebook became even more important for me as a social connection in 2020.
Again, I totally understand that it offers nothing to some people, but I love it.
Oh...and I never see ANY ads. I somehow broke their algorithm in the Spring of 2019 and have never seen another ad.
P.S. Unlike many of you, I have no problem with them data mining me. So what? They find out I like guitars, prog rock, punk rock, am a liberal, and bought some Klipsch speakers recently? Oooh. Scary. Not.
P.P.S. The trolling has fallen dramatically since Parler opened up. I almost never see a troll any more.

You say that as if it weren't true... I'll have you know there are a number of hot, Russian super-models competing for my hand in marriage as we speak! I get emails alerting me to that fact almost every day!
That HAS to be legit, otherwise they wouldn't make it past my spam filter...
Right?

Ah, the old "I have nothing to hide" dismissal... Ok.
Personally, I don't feel comfortable with anyone outside my personal friends and family knowing ANYTHING about me. Not my SSN, my DOB, my age, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, what I buy, what websites I visit, or what my favorite flavor of ice cream is. Does that mean I have "something to hide"? No, it means it's NOBODY'S BUSINESS but my own. And if you keep letting your privacy get chipped away, little by little, you'll eventually find that you have NO privacy left.
Just ask your average Chinese citizen... In China, you have to give up your biometrics just to USE the internet. Think it can't happen here? Just keep being complacent about it. Every little piece of your privacy you give away today makes it easier to give up a little more further down the road.

Besides this forum, a recording forum and a knife forum are my only social media I use period and I haven't posted in either of those in months.

Well, I guess I see things differently. I worked in advertising in NYC for 23 years and targeted advertising and marketing just makes sense to me. And I don't see it as insidious. If I have to see ads, I'd rather see ads that were relevant to me than ads which aren't.Mossman wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 2:46 pm Ah, the old "I have nothing to hide" dismissal... Ok.

And again, I'm just not so paranoid about data-mining of what I've posted on Facebook. I don't post my driver's license, passport, bank info, passwords, SSN, etc etc etc. I make posts about things like lunch, music, politics, pets, etc.
Now, if Trump had been re-elected, I would possibly be in jeopardy for my political posts...and that would have worried me...but as for data-mining, nah.

One of the things I do actully like about Facebook is the classifieds - especially the real estate listings. Easy to search by location and you can contact the sellers directly without having to talk to a realtor.

I just found out my Tumblr account (at least the one Imade using my backup email address) was renamed delightfultrumparbiter. WTF? 3 years ago I signed up and must have used a password that was compromised (same password/email that was compromised shortly after the MOMO takeover)
Needless to say, I went directly to the site ( no links were clicked), created a new password and deleted the account.
Didn't bother to look at what the account was following, but the first few posts were nothing I want my name attached to, even if not an email I use regularly.
