From about Thanksgiving until the end of February, winter in Thailand is exceedingly pleasant. Cool, breezy mornings and clear , warm and dry days. If one doesn't live here it still would make a great place to 'over winter'

Looks like a very nice place to be indeed. Is that your yard/garden?

Very nice - not knowing much about the area, is having a garden/yard of that size common?

This is inside a gated townhouse community. We are fortunate to have an end unit that backs up to a different community separated by two 10 foot high walls. Units in between two other houses of course only have a small patio area in back. Thailand is quite diverse and even in the city (Bangkok) you'll find large houses with big gardens next to tin roofed shacks. It's really something to see. This is also a suburb of Bangkok, about 45 minutes north of the city's northernmost boundaries.

A pic from the front porch so you can get a sense of perspective on the garden and the dividing wall.

Brought to you by Winter in Thailand:

As I waited for my Grab Taxi (our version of Uber)...I snapped a pic of these birds picking about in the flooded rice field across the road from my development

If I ever traveled, I'd prefer to stay in my comfort zone and go to places that are just like the U.S., which defeats the purpose.

I love your posts. Good for you and your willingness to take the cannonball plunge into a diverse culture.

Every time I want to get a Visa I watch a travel show about Indonesia or a Locked up Abroad segment. Problem solved.

Current events would indicate that it's far more dangerous to live in the US right now I'm afraid. And as to diverse culture, different from my upbringing for sure but NJ was far more diverse than Thailand will ever be.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing!

I was born in Bangkok, but never been back since I was young.

I heard Lumpinee is gone.

I guess you mean the old Muay Thai Stadium....that was gone before my arrival I think. The new one is nice...but lacks the same atmosphere one would think. If you mean Lumpinee Park...that's stil there of course !

Yes, I meant the Muay stadium. So, there's a new Muay stadium replacing it?

About now, normally, the farang would be pouring over there. I would imagine things are different right now. I would be there in a second if there were not the travel restrictions. I hope to end up back over there, or India, or Viet Nam by the end of next year.

And your right. The USA is WAY more dangerous than any of the places I just mentioned.

Wow, thanks!

My son's best friend he met in college is Thai. He's back home there because of the pandemic. He said its as if covid is non=existent there already?

How much is a decent sized home for a couple in a safe area there if I may ask? Can foreigners own property there?

Life is fairly normal as the borders have been locked closed since March except for returning Thais or foreigners with retirement or marriage visa permissions. I cannot leave now because it would be loads of red tape and hoops to jump thru to return until things open up again.

As far as homes, foreigners can own standalone homes but cannot own the land they sit on, complicating matters. But renting a nice home on a long or short term lease is easy and much cheaper than in America. Foreigners can own condos outright in certain buildings where up to 49% of the units are allocated for foreign ownership.

If you want just a sampler of home and rental prices, check out these sites:

Best move I ever made..especially since NJ is being blasted with 20 inches of snow as I write this and Covid-19 out of control.

Yeah, I'm not missing those NYC winters right now! I lived through 23 of them. Fuck that.

It's 52 and sunny here in San Antonio. :)

Covid is everywhere where there are humans willing to break simple safety rules..such as smuggling cheap labor in from Myanmar to work like slaves in the shrimp industry. But no Covid in my little corner of paradise.

It was actually in the 50's when I got out about 6:15 this morning and quite breezy. The Thais are all wearing demin jackets and some with woolen caps today.. Ha ha ha. The shops are selling winter coats suitable for a polar expedition.

An old friend who was stationed at one of the big U.S. Air Farce bases in Thailand back during the Vietnam war, loved to tell of a cold front that came thru there just before he was scheduled to return home.
Dropped the temps down into the 50's and everyone on base was wearing arctic parkas! :D

About 53 here as I type this which is why we chose to retire to Floriduh.
