There are some days in a man's life, like having a child...or finally scoring that single-channel Plexi Marshall you've coveted for thirty years or so.

Well here it is...actually it's a Super Lead, so basically it's a Plexi but in JCM chassis, one of the first JCM800 series amps made.

100w, and running at 50w now. Original save for a Master Volume on the back. Original 2x12" cab. Probably t-75s. Surprisingly lightweight.

Can't believe I scored this and at a very very reasonable price too -500€ and my Ht20 in trade. In my book that's a Steal... especially when it's looking like it's never even been on a gig. Incredible for an amp getting towards 40 years of age.

And yes, it sounds effin' great...clean tight punch, no noises, just pure rock with whatever you play. Can't wait to drive it some and patch the channels etc but alas, time to hit the sack....

Congrats, you can't get too much more rock-n-roll than that, looking forward to hearing what you do with it.

Yeah, it's...whatever you play on it, even spanky clean, it just rocks. There's something about the bare-bone simplicity and sheer punch of it that just spells rock.

It's so funny - I tested it real brief when I went to pick it up - and the guy watched and then shook his head and just said that damn why is it amps never sound as great as they do just when you're about to let them go.

My heart missed a beat right there with fear he might second-guess letting it go but nope. Got it.

He even came to the car to bid farewell to the amp when I left. Image

I'm never ever selling this. At least as long as I can hold a guitar and have money for food. No-ope. I've owned three variations of these before and a JVM head as well, and I always was just looking for these.

(Well of course if someone offers me something totally insane for it is another story but it'd really have to be like home mortgage size wad of dough or me being desperate for that to happen).

The farthest L is leaning at an inappropriate angle. Must be fake. Please ship it to me so I can adequately dispose of it. No charge of course.

Opened it up this morning...could only sleep for 4 hours it's like Christmas for me the has 1991 made G12-65 speakers in it. Probably those have been swapped. In any case they sound real nice, very punchy and there's none of that shrillness some Marshall cabs have aplenty, I'd call these downright warm compared with my Eminence Governor cab - those are V30 type speakers and far more bright and driven sounding.

The head has JJ tubes that look new, and one possibly even original Marshall branded preamp tube. Found an old service sticker from '77 inside, but it's obviously been serviced somewhat recently too.

I'll have to consider that hard Image...this place is sorely missing a 'like' button btw. Feels downright weird not to be able to respond with a FB style like Image

First band practice...oh yeah. Really superb. Since it doesn't need gain or saturation much to roar and sound aggressive, and since it has such projection and punch, it's a delight in band context. No noise or hiss when you don't play, yet when you hit the strings it screams. No more struggling to get those clean parts heard, no more masking of sounds because of gain buzzing... everything punches through with clarity and the whole band as a result sounds better than ever.

All it needs is some EQ (I give it a sharp low-pass at 2000Hz and hi-pass at 155hz) and some tweaking with the parametric EQ, plus a bit of boosting with Boss OD-1.

I was able to turn the master halfway up.

One downside to the clarity and projection is, you also hear every mistake and badly held chords etc very clearly Image

It's also amazing how huge difference even slight EQ changes yield. I mean, if I change like, say 1.2Khz range up or down by just two notches, it's a staggering difference in high-mid response.

You can go from Hell's Bells to Megadeth just by dropping low eq by maybe 3 and tweaking lo-mid and hi-mid band by 3-6 notches to push the high midrange into breakup more. No need to add gain.

But, yeah ...finally it's the sound I always wanted, whatever I play it sounds like it's coming from Stained Class or Screaming for Vengeance or The Number of The Beast or Back in Black...it's exactly that iconic feel and color of the sound. No buzz, but still totally rock and metal.

Setup: guitar > GT-8 (eq, sub-eq, od-1 boost, tiny bit of spring reverb, volume pedal, wah) > ampImage

Hah!

It just keeps getting better.

You know I originally was buying just the head. Turned out he also had a cab for it, so I was interested in that too, but he had no idea what they're worth. I said 200 to 500 even, depending on several issues, but that since I didn't know what's inside it, I'd be willing to buy it for 200€. He said he'd think about it initially.

When I went there to seal the deal, I again offered 200 for the cab (I had an extra 100 on me and would have paid 300 without a second thought) and he agreed, because he wanted to sell it as a whole and have it done with.

It turns out it had G12-65 speakers in it that cost about 170€ new (made in china) and those were mint thru and thru, and probably maybe in 1995.

Since I wanted a V30 type, more aggressive speaker to pair with the great sounding but rather round sounding 65, I put my Eminence Governor in, leaving me with one extra 65...which I put on sale for 150€. (I once had a T75/V30 speaker and it was a really great 2x12" setup), much better than a cab with just either type.

If it sells anything near asking price - and it'll certainly sell for 100€ at minimum being basically NOS, I really got a deal and then some with the cab.
