If the world doesn't implode I predict the used gear market will be FLOODED in less than a year.
Why am I not surprised?andrewsrea wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 1:55 pm Good article...

I've done my part to contribute to new sales in 2020. I started out modestly enough with just a b-stock SX Liquid in March. However, I've started to average things out a bit with five more in the past week: SX Callisto STD+ DS, 2020 Epi 50s Standard Gold Top LP, 2020 SG Standard in Arctic White (both from the new "Inspired by Gibson" line) and a couple HB double cutaway Juniors (mustard yellow and faded cherry with a split stacked P90 and a 50s neck)

You'd have no idea when you first walk in downstairs but upstairs is a different story. They're on hooks covering all the wall space and racks take up most of the available floor space...

I think I'm at 1 purchased this year and 1 pending. I picked up the Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster early Spring and I have a Squier Paranormal Cyclone on order with Musician's Friend but they are being slow to ship. Hope to have it by end of next week or I'm going to cancel the order and probably order at Sweetwater. I think I'm up to 8-10 pedals this year. I ran out of shelf space to store the ones not on my board.

This is why you need to move to WI, we have basements. And we are far enough the water table that you can ad a sub-basement if need be. Gotta start thinking in additional dimensions when your "collection" reaches TJ magnitude.
I did buy 2 guitars last year so I was part of the problem I guess...

Local pawnshop even had less of a selection than usual (not that you find many deals these days). The guy said that everyone wanted a new hobby, etc. There was a dot-like Agile semi-hollow, perhaps AS-820, on the wall for something like $350.
Anyway, I am certainly glad that all the bankrupt small business owners at least have a hobby

Chocol8 brings up a great question: will the newer generation of guitar players become 'collectors' as many of us have?
tobijohn the guitar manufactures put you in the honorable mention / thank-you category. Kurt's kids can now go to college, due to your Rondo collection!

Probably some will, especially considering that with today's software it is possible to avoid amplifier expense altogether (for someone who only records for fun) or just own a single amp and not have to collect vintage ampsandrewsrea wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 3:16 pm ...will the newer generation of guitar players become 'collectors' as many of us have?
P.S. and if it gets to the point where a guitar synth slapped on any electric lets you fully model any vintage guitar... I just hope that we'll be allowed some retro music at the "retirement" home before we're processed into soylent green
Females are WAY less likely to become gear addicts, and most younger players aren’t going to have the disposable income for a LONG time. I also think the idea of buying a ton of cheaper guitars was a fairly recent phenomenon and may be just a temporary era. My guess, the near future will be dominated by flexible modelers and digital effects, and players focused on just a couple of favorite guitars. You can see signs of it in the stats. Overall fretted instrument sales were down a bit but Fender and Gibson are setting records. Is that people buying one “premium” brand name instrument instead of several cheap Firefly types?

FIVE in one week??????
Pure coincidince, the SX Callisto was the last lefty in stock and everyone who had previously purchased one raved about them, the Epis were a preorder during Sweerwater's June Gearfest and were 15% off list, and the HBs happened to be b-stocks simultaneously in stock...

I have not bought a single new guitar this year, which is really unusual for me. I did try to buy an Agile AL-3200 in blue quilt from Rondo, but they had screwed-up their inventory count and refunded me.
Instead, I went for high dollar vintage stuff this year opting to get a 1979 Guild S-300, a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard, and a 1979 Gibson RD Artist. I kinda went nuts and have already exceded my yearly gear budget. I do not plan on buying anything else for the rest of te year other than maybe a fuzz pedal, unless there is something that I just can not do without. It's gonna be hard....but I gotta do it. I am not made out of disposable income.

I thought TJ also just bought a Supro? Anyway, that's way beyond my buys (of course). This year I have picked up a NOS Gibson LP, an Eastwood Backlund 800, a few Revilles and a used Ibanez AM93, not really changing my buying habits. I would have grabbed one of those Epiphone 50's Gold Tops if they had P90s. I just can't justify spending on Fender's & Gibson's new pricing. I think they're both insane, neither is too lefty friendly, and I'm happy with what I have there. I hope the used market does get flooded in the year to come, because good lefty picks are slim right now.tobijohn wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 6:48 pm I've done my part to contribute to new sales in 2020. Almost bought 5 or so. Does that count. Actual guitars I think was 0. I did by a cheap used edrum setup. I think it was this yr. So far my drummer had burned out 2 of my pads. He's down to hitting a cymbal for a floor tom sound. Anyone ever fix one of these before?

Seems to me you would be doing the lefty world a great service if you were to have a group of 3 or so at a time pay about $80 each to try out a dozen guitars or so each just so they could get an idea of what they like and what to look for. Seems you could make yourself florida's 2nd main tourist destination.tobijohn wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 9:36 amPure coincidince, the SX Callisto was the last lefty in stock and everyone who had previously purchased one raced about them, the Epis were a preorder during Sweerwater's June Gearfest and were 15% off list, and the HBs happened to be b-stocks simultaneously in stock...
I would setup a stand outside selling over sauced chicken wings, ribs and Cheetos.nomadh wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 2:13 pm Seems to me you would be doing the lefty world a great service if you were to have a group of 3 or so at a time pay about $80 each to try out a dozen guitars or so each just so they could get an idea of what they like and what to look for. 0 new guitars this year for me. As a matter of fact, I can't think of any new gear that I bought except strings. 3 used guitars. 2 were trades for work / retirement gifts from golem (a dead-on Aria Pro 2 replica of a 74 LP Custom) and @james shafner (a Blake Wright Santa Fe). The other was the Squire Jazz Bass I am renovating.
