Pfffft... Most of this stuff isn't even classic rock. If it came out when I was in high school, then it's not old enough to be classic rock, yet...
What are you? A bunch of dummy millennials?
I detest the term "classic rock" because WHEN you were in high school determines YOUR definition of what is/is not classic rock.

For you, @Mossman
That's not classic rock either... That's called "oldies". When I was in high school, all we had were oldies, because classic rock was still new.

Is Carry wayward son classic or prog? I say iconic, anthemic, genre leading, prog leaning quintessential classic rock.
You know Nomad, I am darned if I know. I like your description quite well so let's go with that!
Styx Equinox and Crystal Ball, Kansas Leftoverture, Rush 2112, Boston First Album, Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs, Live, and Long Misty Days, Kiss Alive, Frampton Comes Alive, Aerosmith Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic , Rocks, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult, Zeppelin 1 through Physical Graffiti, Mountain "compilations" on those bootleg 8 Tracks I mentioned earlier, and so many more were my high school soundtrack. What an amazing time for music!
8-track high five . Add in ZZtop. Well known for selling more 8track tapes than albums because so many people bought them to listen while driving

Oh, I hope nobody was taking me seriously... I was just practicing my cranky old man.
Though I have to admit, I did feel a little indignant the first time I heard a song from the '80s on the "Classic Rock" station in my area. And it wasn't recent... I think I was in my late '30s... I was like: "Oh, HELLS no! Motley Crue is NOT classic rock!"

I try and seperate oldies/ classic rock and roll from classic "rock" from classic metal from hair metal from grunge. Nothing after that has a name because it isnt worth mentioning. not really true theres post grunge, post metal and post classic rock. All the same sounds just in the wrong year.

I thought that we were just having a little fun with it. I'd guess that we are about the same age.
Yeah, I think so... I'm 51. I don't think of myself as an "old man" yet (I sure don't feel like an old man), but I do sometimes catch myself thinking things that my father would have said.

Led zeppelin? Deep purple, bad co. Jimi hendrix that where classic rock begins for me.
mozz wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 8:32 pm
I'm gonna say the first Kiss album and first VH album were outside of the classic rock cutoff date.
In my world-view, classic rock begins with the Beatles and ends with the death of Bonzo.

Ha! No wonder you are so full of grit. You are just a punk-ass kid. Wait until you are bumping your head on 60, like me. But I think that you have the classics era fairly well defined. I usually go from about the emergence of CCR and Steppenwolf through to the Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks, with a little bleed over on both ends.
I was 13 in '68. Steppenwolf, The Doors, Vanilla Fudge, Velvet Underground, Country Joe and the Fish, etc hugely influenced my view of the world. Or perhaps just enhanced it.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Even using the Beatles as a starting point, I'm really thinking 1966 on up.

I tracked this thread down to put up a vote for Robin Trower. I've been downloading a RT boxset. Some later 70's stuff I hadn't listened to before. Some songs I dont care for nearly as much as most others. I downloaded only half of the w/Jack Bruce tracks from those 2 cd's. But then...the last cd in the set called Back It Up with James Dewar back in the band...and I really liked most of the material. The first 2 albums I've liked a longtime.
"The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils. The motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted."

I am a big fan of Trower, was fortunate to see him in a small club around 1986 or thereabouts. Caravan to Midnight was a disappointment to me. Iirc I liked his work work with Bruce and Lordan as BLT, and Victims of the Fury as well. Albums 1 through 4 are mainly where it's at for me, with a tune or three from In City Dreams too.

I was blown away by the whole bridge of sighs 8track so I tracked down the other first 4 or 5 like caravan and I remember both me and my friend hating most of it. Just so disappointing to us. Then I liked the stuff with Bruce later. And some other things here and there. But no matter what album era his concerts are outstanding. Probably seen him 4 times.
I remember 1 time he did an outro solo dripping with univibe. Maybe end of sighs. But he did a soft landing where he just let it fade out and drift off. Everyone was so mesmerized we forgot to applaud. It was maybe 15 seconds before 1 guy snapped out of it and started cheering. Then more. Then a few standing then the full standing ovation for a minute and he had this pleased smug look on his face like "I got you!" Truly wizard like spell.

Pretty sure that sailcat art is the great mad artist jack davis of superfan fame. If not he was sure influenced by him.
yup
The resulting album, produced by Pete Carr, was a concept album with a biker theme. The cover art and drawings inside the gatefold cover were drawn by Jack Davis, featuring motorcycles, predominately the Harley-Davidson with a series of drawings for each song on the album. The concept album's songs loosely tell the story of a motorcycle vagrant

@raindog you need to add a few things like:
Not so much for me. I hated most of the music during hs. I hated mtv and the control they had. When your dad starts out at 6 or 7 with CSN and blood sweat & tears being your favorites. Add in 3 dog night, manassas and allman bros before you're 10 then you find Hendrix, zztop and skynyrd, trower and black sabbath by 12 or 13 on your own you don't get easily seduced into Kiss, motley crue or dexys midnight runners in HS. Even 80's mtv era zztop was barely listenable to me. So when I graduated HS in the 80s seems to have no connection to my musical tastes. Then after dropping out of modern music I grabbed on to the 90s grunge like a starving baby to a nipple. So I Was back somehow in the 30's. Of course there is always new music around that I can get into but they tend to be out of place in the current era.
