FOr me, personally, "Classic Rock" means mostly 70's music.

For a band that wasn't that well known and had almost zero airplay that I know of nothing screamed classic rock more than Montrose first album

Just listened to that with a friend yesterday (he has a vinyl problem), and it sounded good, with great songs. Just a great album.

And it had this.

I can remember a friend having Montrose and Nazareth on 8tracks in his car. Lots of those bands never got the airplay around here. It depended on whether the disc jockey or station manager liked them. I knew Sammy Hagar played with Ronnie Montrose but i looked him up in wikipedia and saw he played with Edgar Winter, never knew that. Some of these classic rock bands had 50 different members over the years. Some of the sad things on Wikipedia about death, suicides, etc. I played in a garage band back in 78' with a few local guys. I started 1 band and some friends started others. 1 guy who i haven't seen since 1990 took his own life a few years back after being in a bad car wreck, got hooked on pain killers and then the doctors stopped them. I guess he couldn't handle the pain and withdrawals. A lot of these classic rock stars are gone.

Agree with LightWingStudios about Keith Scott. He is a big part of the attraction of those songs and albums.

Aerosmith Rocks, stayed up late for the local FM Album station's debut of the entire record before it was available in stores. Uninterrupted iirc. Recorded it to 8 Track on my Sound Design all in one Radio, Phono, 8 Track unit and was rocking it at school the next day. One of my favorite Aerosmith Albums to this day. I was so worried it couldn't live up to Aerosmith, Toys In The Attic, and Get Your Wings, but I was blown away by it as I listened through headphones while recording it. I listened a few more times all the way through before I could finally turn everything off and try to get to sleep.

Speaking of 8 tracks, there were some small variety stores in our area, and they always had Bins of "value priced" 8 tracks for sale. K-Mart was the Big Dog, you could fit 3-4-of these other stores inside our local K-Mart. I didn't know what bootleg copies were back then, I just knew my teenage music $ went a lot further at these stores. I was exposed to a lot of great music I would have otherwise missed, at least for a few years until college and campus radio and meeting other folks and their record/tape collections.

I didn't understand until after I left my hometown how lucky I was with respect to rock and roll. I grew up in San Antonio and didn't realize that not everyone had a thriving rock concert and club scene. I eventually learned a lot of it was due to one or two deejays on one station who were almost solely responsible for breaking a lot of the hard rock acts we remember from the seventies and eighties.

Is Carry wayward son classic or prog? I say iconic, anthemic, genre leading, prog leaning quintessential classic rock.

Couple of my favorites from back in the day I remember trying to learn Evil Ways note for note and it was about the only song I played for months I was around 14 at the time and still playing it 50 years later but I have added a few tunes in that time.

It just doesn't get any better than Lord Of The Thighs, my favorite Aerosmith cut!

Evil ways note for note? We used to play it but I sure never put that time into it. Pretty sure we play it a bit "looser" :)
We are just adding in DP black night and having fun with smoke on the water. Both bands solid classic rock

You know Nomad, I am darned if I know. I like your description quite well so let's go with that!

Styx Equinox and Crystal Ball, Kansas Leftoverture, Rush 2112, Boston First Album, Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs, Live, and Long Misty Days, Kiss Alive, Frampton Comes Alive, Aerosmith Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic , Rocks, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult, Zeppelin 1 through Physical Graffiti, Mountain "compilations" on those bootleg 8 Tracks I mentioned earlier, and so many more were my high school soundtrack. What an amazing time for music!

Pfffft... Most of this stuff isn't even classic rock. If it came out when I was in high school, then it's not old enough to be classic rock, yet...
