Hey Guys! We were able to do some work on it today! He routed the neck pocket, pickup cavities, control cavity, and roundover today. he also did a bit of sanding to get it ready for filling the grain. Here are the pics:

Great, good painting weather! You can just come straight down south, drop him off here and cut west to Orlando. The kits will still be in their original cartons. I've been to Disney World, he won't be missing anything. If he gets whiny, there's a waterpark just down the street I can take him to...

Looking good! Was he scared of the router? I'm still scared of the router.

Looking good! Was he scared of the router? I'm still scared of the router.

He's a little skittish with it. I had to correct him one time about having his fingers a little too close to the bit. He wasn't close enough to hurt himself, but it was going to be. He listened well and I never saw him do it again.

Thank you! He''s pretty good, and I am very proud. He starts high school in the fall, and luckily got into the only Tech school in our county. It's very competitive throughout the 8 middle schools in the county, and his tech field (welding) only has 13 positions available. He was one of 19 that applied and got in. I've been letting him MIG weld brake rotors together for the past couple of years since he seemed interested, and he really took to it.

This is great to see. No matter how hard I tried, cant get m youngest to be interested. My oldest played a while and seems to like being around power tools a bit. Building his own kit? Bonus!!!!!!! And going to be a welder as well. Congratulations! HAve you been to Disney before?

I have been to Disney World, several times. I lived in Orlando for a year and a half 20 years ago and worked at the Peabody Hotel across I-Drive from the Convention Center. It's now a Hyatt Regency from what I understand. My family has never been. This will pretty much be our 2nd vacation as a family in the past 16 years.

Very cool, glad to see it coming along. Nice to hear his welding skills are good enough to get him in the program. It's a good way to earn a living or to have as a backup skill

Great kid and dad! Learning to work and to build with your hands is one of the best things to learn!

He finally got all of the body prep work done today, so he sprayed the body gold first, and then red. We tested on some scrap and found that the red came out a little transparent. Here it is with one coat on it.

He somehow scratched the back, so it has to be sanded again, but progress has been made! I have to get more paint tonight, since we used some to test. He's a little more into it now than he was for sanding.

What? He wasn't into the sanding phase? I can't imagine why. lol

He is using Duplicolor Perfect Match Inferno Red Metallic for the red and just regular Duplicolor black for the "burst." He'll be using Minwax Gloss Polyurethane for the clear. I've used these products together in the past with good results.

Here we are today. It's a bit too humid to paint today, but he did anyway. 3 coats of red, 1 of the black, drying in the wind on a cloudy day.

Not too terrible. When the sun does poke out, it looks great, but it looks a bit blah with the clouds. He may start layering clear tomorrow. Then back to sanding....

FWIW, I've done a fair few guitars now - plus a few arcade cabs - and I'm still scared of my router!

He's been doing "spray paint art" on poster board for the past few years, so he knows how to paint. I'm also close by, reminding (annoying) him on how to shoot the paint.

I'm probably not the best influence on the router. I'm not scared of it. After working in machine shops and running milling machines and lathes and shoveling chips almost right up to the spinning tool. When you do that kind of thing every day for 10-12 hours, you may become complacent and do things you probably shouldn't. I know I have at times. I have respect for the machines (and router), and I know the damage they can do, but I stay safe when using them and I'm not scared of them.

Well, we had a setback today. I went out to check on the body, and it appears that the clear coat bubbled, a lot. I'm not sure if it got too hot sitting in the sun or what, but it pretty much peeled right off in sheets. It only stuck to the sides, which were not getting full sunlight. this is the first time I've had this happen with this paint combination. We'll get it sorted, it just sucks.

Looks good, though! I've never had poly bubble up on me, but I've never left it in the sun to dry, either. How long did he let the paint cure before spraying the poly? If the paint isn't done off-gassing, then the poly won't adhere to it. That has happened to me.
