I'm not happy with the way things have been going either but from what I know, India has terrible hair weather so that's out. I've been searching for a place that is reminiscent of the TV shows that shaped my expectations of what life was going to be like when i grew up (Leave It to Beaver, The Andy Giffith Show, My Three Sons, The Donna Reed Show, Father Knows Best, etc) but so far, no luck...:)
Heheh... Yeah, I think you'd need a time machine for that. I'd settle for going back to the '80s. One time, I told a friend that if I had my way, I'd go back to 1982 and stay there. He said: "Why would you want to go through high school again?". I said: "Who said anything about going back to high school??" I'd so back the age I am now and... "invent" a few things. :-) Maybe prevent a few things from happening.

I have a fantasy that I revisit more nights than not (especially lately) of waking up the next morning and I'm back in my early 20s and all of this was just some crazy, unsettling dream. Actually, it's turned into more of a prayer...:)

Nice plan.
So... you are giving up the acquired knowledge as a trade? ;)

I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. What ever happened to the potential move up to Lake Geneva?

@Mossman - I know it's not quite the same thing, but I went through a period in my life when I lived alone and had very little, and in a very remote location. Albeit I had a permanent address, but my nearest neighbors were all of the non-human persuasion. Back in those days I used liquid courage to keep sane, but even that ended up turning on me. Have you ever heard the saying "wherever you go, there you are?". You are a resourceful, strong willed guy and my prediction is that you will be better/stronger having lived through your current situation. Peace to you and mojo for this to be a chapter in your life to write about later.

Still working on it. There are a few variables that need to settle out, hopefully in the next few months...

Well, waiting a bit would be a good idea - we had 80's last week and now right back in the middle of a foot plus of snow coming down ;-)

I am actually down in florida multiple times a year for work, we have a production site in Fernandina Beach. I know its quite a bit farther north than most of the florida AGF crew, but one of these times I'll have to stay long enough to come watch @tonebender show or catch up with someone from here.

I hear that... When I was a kid, I used to fantasize about time-travelling to the future. But now, all my time-travelling fantasies are about going back to the past.

Thanks for your words of encouragement. That means a lot to me. But don't worry, I'm not terribly morose about my situation. This too will pass. My biggest regret is that I stayed here too long. I should have blasted out of this God-forsaken place as soon my last relationship ended (the whole reason why I was here in the first place), but after it was over, I kinda got stuck in a holding pattern... I wasn't depressed, or heartbroken, or anything (I was actually relieved when it was over), but I felt deflated. I was just going through the motions, day after day. Go to work, go home, play/work on guitars, etc. It's like I've been sleep-walking through the last few years. I didn't know where I wanted to be, and I didn't have any money to get there if I did. This is an expensive place to live, and I don't make a lot of money (I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, either :) ), and while I wouldn't say I was struggling to pay the rent, or anything, I only ever had "enough" to be comfortable, and reasonably content. That's a dangerous place to be. It makes you complacent, and more inclined to maintain the status quo, rather than actually do something to change your situation. All of my life, I've been adventurous. I've lived and travelled all over the country, and I never turned down an opportunity for adventure (or created my own), but this time... I lost my spirit. I got trapped in a self-imposed state of inertia. Just waiting for something to happen, rather than making something happen.

I've had my share of "hermitages" in the wilderness too, but believe me, you can be just as lonely in a city. I used to think that loneliness didn't affect me. That was for other people. I've always been comfortable in my own company, and I value my solitude, but these last few years have been rough on that front. I've had absolutely zero social life, and I've never had a harder time making friends as I have here. I'm a pretty gregarious guy, and I've never had trouble in that arena anywhere else I've been, but the people here are diferrent. I hate to paint with a broad brush (and I know it's already a stereotype), but most of the folks I've met out here have been self-involved flakes, and I don't really have many options for social interaction. I don't drink anymore, so going to bars is out (there's surprisingly very few bars here, anyway), and the San Fernando Valley is a cultural black hole. There's no live music, or events, or even interesting places to go where you might meet people you have something in common with. There's nothing but businesses, and 7-11s, and shopping centers, and fast food restaurants as far as they eye can see... When I first moved here, I used to get lost a lot, because EVERYTHING LOOKS THE SAME. There's no distinguishing features in the landscape to give you a sense of where you are. Just a continuous expanse of grey, urban ugliness everywhere you go... with palm trees.

But I'll be leaving here in a couple of months. I'm going to go bum around Flagstaff while the weather is good. It doesn't make a lick of logical sense, financially speaking (Flagstaff has a high cost of living too), but the years I lived there were the happiest of my life, and I've missed that place ever since I left 20 years ago (gawd, it really doesn't feel like that long). I don't know if I'm going to stay there, but I need to be somewhere where I can breathe, and feel at ease... get centered. I know the town won't be the same, but there's something about that whole part of Arizona that makes me feel at peace. Like I belong there. I don't have as much money as I had expected to (I had to have some major dental work done, which put a big dent in my savings), but I'll have enough to coast for a little while and figure things out. If I keep using money as an excuse not to leave this dump, I never will.

Me neither. My friends and family always me when I'm going to come back to Massachusetts... I say: "When it doesn't go below 40° in the winter" (That's 5° C, Sabas. :D ).

Maybe if that global warming thing actually happened, there might have been a chance. But then again, the east coast would be under water, so....

I'll trade you days with temps in the 80s/90s with humidity the same as many times as you want for days with temps in the 20s/30s. I definitely don't like Chicago winters, but I'm not driven to desperation over them. It was never my idea to move down here in the first place. My only concern is that the last time I went through a real winter was over twenty years ago and I wonder how well my body with its structural faults might react to it now. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to spend a week or two up there as a test run before I pull up stakes completely. If it turns out to be a problem, there's always the Ashville area, I suppose. Maybe Johnson City, TN if i want to do it on the cheap...

Well, I've been here 25 years now & I can't even imagine winter in north Georgia!
My brother lived for many years in Lauderdale & our mother used to say she thought he was trying to hatch out her wood stove! when he came to visit. :D
I would likely be the same way now.

I love temps in the 80's & 90's! when it gets into triple digits it bothers me.

We get about half dozen days a year where the temp drops to or below freezing & that is plenty for me!

I think that living here thins your blood & you keep remembering when it was thicker.

I agree....but here north of Bangkok we've had about 2 weeks of 99-104 every day and another on the way....I usually despise monsoon (rainy season) but this year I am really looking forward to it !

Wow, thanks Randy. That's the nicest thing anybody's said to me in a while. :D

It has taken me too long to learn that the way you deal with a situation has a big effect on how hard a time it is. And recovery has taught me not to get upset about circumstances that are beyond my control ("accept the things I cannot change"). But mostly, I just try to stay grateful... California is the homeless capital of the US (probably the world). I see people living in the streets everywhere I go, and if I hadn't been blessed with the resources and the help that I received, I could very well be among them.

Arizona has a monsoon season (about mid-summer), but it's probably not the same as your monsoon season. In Arizona it would rain torrentially every day for about 20-30 minutes, then the clouds would disappear and the rest of the day would be sunny. It usually happened in the afternoon, but sometimes it would rain at night, and it would last a bit longer... about half the night. The rain wasn't continuous, but there'd be a lot of thunder and lightning. A lot of people didn't like monsoon season, because it's no fun getting doused with a flash deluge out of nowhere, or getting stuck huddled under an awning, or something, waiting for it to stop. But I liked it. It was refreshing. I liked sitting outside at night, watching the lightning too. It really lit up the whole sky in this ultra-purple light!

Monsoon in southern AZ the best part of summer (basically mid-March until October most years...). We have had some non-soons (with almost no rain) and it sucks the joy out of the summer.

Hoping for another good one this year like the past 2, but with El Nino firmly setup that likely will not happen, unfortunately.

May and June just suck in general because I don't like to wake up at 5am to take advantage of the only cool weather of the day, other than that it is hard to fathom moving back to the midwest.

I'm hitting the pool @ 6am because it's too hot otherwise. Never really cools down much at night but at least I can swim laps before the sun fries me to a crisp

Sounds like the ideal place for growing grapefruit! Supposedly the less change between day/night temps the sweeter the grapefruit.

They don't seem to grow grapefruit here but a similar fruit Pomelo is very popular and avaliable everywhere...very sweet, a bit drier flesh than grapefuit...love it...I wonder if FLA also has it ?

Well a bit of research 'lernt' me that Pomelo is a separate species....and that grapefruit is actually a hybrid created by crossing an orange with a Pomelo !

They don't seem to grow grapefruit here but a similar fruit Pomelo is very popular and avaliable everywhere...very sweet, a bit drier flesh than grapefuit...love it...I wonder if FLA also has it ?
Florida has it but Pomelo isn't anything like as common as grapefruit. If I remember correctly, grapefruit is the child of Pomelo, as in grapefruit was developed from Pomelo and has a lot less
pulp given similar weight for the fruit.
