Need your input: Gretch guitars

'Morning' guys,

As I was researching 335 alternatives, I came across the Electromatic G5622. It's the mid-line model (the lowest being the Streamliners) and I'm gassing. While I was watching some vids, the G5222 popped up and caught my attention. I'm looking to sell my baja tele* and am concerned that this will cut through everything much like the tele did. I know that semi-hollows and solid-bodis models are two different beasts.

"Buy both?" Not gonna happen. I'm only allowed one at a time (says wife with 25 pairs of shoes).

Word has it that this is an extremely versatile guitar. Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

This is the model I was looking at:

I happen to have a Gretsch 5622 Semi-Hollow and love it!
I play it a lot more than my (much more expensive 6120)

Gretsch is making some good inexpensive guitars right now. Streamliners are excellent values and Electromatics aren't bad either.

I have the GT5622T in georgia green. It's one of the best playing guitars I own.

Mickey is the one who perked my interests in Gretsch. Seems quite a few here own them. They have a unique sound. Also picked up some TVJones pickups due the Wisdom of Mickey. Maybe that should be a book.

Going to put the pickups in a Tele style build I have been working on for a couple years or a semi-hollow I have. Might just be the ticket for cutting through the mix as you say. Their pickups are always described as a cross between Tele single coils and humbuckers. Good luck with your choice.

I would tell you where I got it but @Floridan FX has stopped doing things like that. :)

I'm putting a harness from one of those Gretsches into my Vintage hollow as we speak. I got the Super Hilos that came with it but am putting in Fidelitrons instead. The Supers & Filtertrons are pretty similar inductance-wise, output, footprint... The Supers have slug magnets in 1 coil, Trons have the fillister screws in both bobbins.

Waiting for some tubing.

I'd suggest also seriously considering an Ibanez semihollow. I can't speak for your area, but I see great deals on them used occasionally and they're a reasonable sub for a 335 guitar.

I do have a Gretsch 6228 but haven't played the 5### models. I haven't really been in love with the TV Jones pickups I've tried but I don't hate them either. It was the BT65 that really made me fall in love with Gretsch.

I also have a 5622T and it is hands down my finest guitar. It fits me perfectly and it sounds glorious. I like it unplugged, I like it clean, I like it dirty. It is bone stock. It is wonderful.

I played a few of those Streamliners while I was shopping around and really liked those, too. And the recommendation for Ibbys in that price range should not be ignored - lots of good players in that crowd. EDIT: I never played that 5222, but I bet it's great too.

That said, if a deal on a 5622 crops up, I would not hesitate in the slightest. I'd suggest keeping an eye on Adorama - mine was a b stock (but not really) I got from them for less than you're currently asking for that tele, and somebody (@Flatline?) just scored an insane deal from them on an American Strat. Someone there does not know how to price guitars...

Once the new strat arrives, I'll have 3 guitars that were all Adorama deals found on slickdeals. My Duo Sonic HS, Gretsch 5622T, and now the Performer Strat. Why buy used when you can buy new for less than used prices?

Unfortunately, a philosophy that only works for backwards right handers.

That's pretty much the case but FWIW, Adorama does have a Used section which I assume are returns. It can be sorted for lefties, nothing particularly interesting currently though:

I bought the G5222 because of that video and I love it. Lee Anderton pretty much raves about every guitar he plays in their videos (because he has to), but in that video you can easily see and feel his genuine amazement while playing and holding it. That, and the fact that it's almost Malcolm Young's Gretsch, sold me on it and I have no regrets. It's a chambered guitar (you can see the "chambers" when you remove the pickups) so it's almost the best of both solid and semi-hollow worlds.

Man, I have some GAS for the 5622. If they had been in stock when I bought my Ibanez, it would have been a hard decision. I'll probably end up getting one at some point in the future, if a good deal comes along... Maybe for my next birthday. :D

Just got a new Gretsch. Thinner than my G2420T by 1/2" but I much prefer the amber color. Gretsch Streamliner G2420TG
