Hey,

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience on Dean's Build Your Own guitar scheme?

As it happens, I have already amassed no less than three Dean Flying-V's and they're all really good guitars...and I've started to fantasize about having one custom built to my spec, as there is nothing exactly like I'd prefer.

They don't give any preliminary estimates, you need to give your credit card number to even get a quote.

I'm guessing it'd be perhaps something like...1500 or so, for rather basic options? Two grand or so if one wants stainless steel frets or like a compound radius fretboard? Ebony? I've no idea how much the options might cost, but I'm afraid it'd quickly get rather prohibitively priced. Especially considering shipping to Finland and 22% VAT added & customs handling....

I'd probably be way better off if I found a guitar very close to what I'd like and mod it to my preference.

FWIW, what I'd like is a '58 style V with basically no 'flanges' reaching to the neck, ie small body that's cut sharp where the fretboard begins...and white top with multi-ply B/W/B/W binding going all around, no metal V string guide but just inserts for them, black/cream Dean humbuckers, white metal top knobs in triangle formation but pickup switch close to the bridge like it's in 3-in line knob setup, and all the backsides natural lacquered mahogany, dean V neck shape with block inlays (no preference for fretboard wood but stainless frets would be sweet).

Dean USA models start over $2k USD and most of the one's I've looked at are over $3k, so I would assume most custom orders would be in the $2k-$4k area at best.

Yeah? Even the most expensive Deans are just over a grand here...normal Vs like 79 or such go for 800-1000 new and 400-600 used....maybe some artist models are 1200-1500...and then there are the low end bolt-neck models as well which are like 250 or so. I suppose none of those are USA made then. They probably just don't sell those over here at all. Then it's just wayyyy too much. Couldn't imagine putting thousands in something as simple as a guitar. Thanks!
