PICKGUARDS? Do we have any resident craftsmen?

Back in the ye olde AGF days a gentleman named TWANG produced awesome pickguards (I have them in 3 of my SJM's and a SPB bass). And IIRC he also did Epi VJ amp mods and custom panels, etc. Is he still around? Do we have others doing stuff like this?

I used to have a thread called "Gear_Junky's Trunk of Junk" with all of my stuff for sale/trade - pickups, components, pedals, etc. I am hoping to start that again eventually and trading for work is my favorite kind of thing :D

TWANG has never showed up since we escaped to .net from moomoo.
He is in his 70's and last I heard he was in failing health.
I think he stopped making pickguards several years ago.

I have some tele pick guards that have portions of a local well-known artist's prints adhered to them. People really like them and a few have recognized them as her work.

However, I struck gold slapping some bumper stickers from a friend's ski shop on and old pick guard. In skiing vernacular "I temelark ski" is abbreviated to "I tele." Tele skiing is much more demanding than skiing or snowboarding* (read: you sweat your ass off), but it allows us to shimmy up to stashes that the Click-ins can't.

Anyway, Pete's bumper sticker reads "tele till your smelly." I haven't changed it out since I made it in December. This is Pete, owner of Backdoor Sports, holding and officially endorsing the Smelly Tele:

A: About three days.

If someone's in the game, I might have work for them as well. I don't have an urgent need though.

I love that! Really makes a plain painted guitar pop. In fact he can get some killer pr and make a few bucks selling a 5 pack of that sticker for $25 on cl and put it under guitars and paint or pickguards.

I was considering retiring a bit ago and I was thinking I'd get the cnc to start doing custom PG. Probably just a pipe dream, like all my other projects waiting. But who knows what surge of energy I can get if work isn't draining 99.992 % on it.

Weyulllllll.....

I do have access to CNC routers at work. And I can kind of use Fusion360. But, it is at work, and I don't know how the $$ flows. And I do have to do my job, not cut things out for my personal profit.... ?

If anyone has an image and some details (i.e. pickup dimensions), I might try to cut a few when I get a chance here at work from scrap foam. I already carved a slight top for a Yamaha SG neck through I'm working on out of maple. Maybe I should put a build thread on that......

This honestly is my spastic attention span and dingyness talking. But in reality, if there is some interest, I might try out a few. It could convince me to purchase my own CNC (Xcarve). I see there's interest, but I'm not sure how my time will work out - it's hectic season here in the education world. Respond here, and I'll try to make sure I check here often - I'm not always online because of kids, etc.

It might be a tad more complicated, i.e. mr. TWANG would have an actual SJM/Liquid pickguard to use as trace and then to be able to center new pickup routs in it. Results were awesome, though :)

I’ve made a few myself. What a PITA. I always make a template first, which is the PITA, not the actual final cutting. I might be interested if someone were to take up the torch.

I have a CNC machine and a 3D printer, but neither has a big enough work area to do pick guards, so the very few I make are extremely manual effort. Having said so, I would love it if someone could share where they source cheap materials for pickguards. I'm trying to find materials for several right now... one gold flake and one b/w checkerboard (with squares 1/2" or less).

I'm looking for a PC for my SX Tele I put a set of Fender MIM Tex-Mex pups in it and they were just a bit large for the SX PC so I did some carving and it works but not how I would like it to.

Just thinking off the top of my head, I could use at least a half dozen different ones for various projects, probably close to twice that if a girl can dream...
