I only went to the Sweetwater website because of the holiday season to see if there were in fantastic deals on Gibson guitars. I found no such deal but I stumbled onto this amp and it is killing me. I don't need it. I am not even sure how much longer I will continue to be in a band that requires me to play an electric guitar but to me this the best amp to hit the market in awhile.

I once had a blackface custom Princeton built by a local guy and it was amazing. It also had a 12" speaker. My bandmate uses one but it came with a 10" speaker. He changed it out recently for a 12". I have always been a fan of lacquered tweed Fender amps. I have 6 amps now and I know that sounds like a lot and it is, but I had 25 at the peak. Here are the ones I have:

Supro Blues King
Fender Superchamp XD 10" combo
Ampeg Reverberocket
Ampeg J-20
Luker Boutique head
Peavey Classic 30 (got it from @uwmcscott )

I leave the Reverberocket at the rehearsal space. The Supro is a cool little amp but it is sort of a one trick pony that I cannot make work with the band. The Luker is an awesome amp made by Ken Luker. It is probably my best sounding rig but I only used a closed back set up when mic'ing up and we never mic up anymore. So I gig with either the Superchamp or J-20 and mostly the J20.

I could see myself selling the Superchamp, and Supro if I get the Princeton. Interestingly enough the Princeton is only slightly bigger than the Superchamp. 1.5 inches wider and 1 inch taller. Footprint-wise it is about equal. If I do that I would actually be downsizing again. from 6 to 5.

Talk me out if it?

My buddy has a Princeton. Not sure what size speaker. All I know is it sounds AMAZING.

I was going to say the same thing: wrong place for that! We Enable.

I figure if it does stuff you want, and you end up swapping two amps for that one, that seems like a logical trade, unless you'd be losing your ass on it, financially.

Wrong place to ask to be talked out of it...

I have that exact amp purchased from Sweetwater 2 years ago. I also very rarely play amps anymore, so I have the Princeton, a Boss Katana and an old Mustang 1. If you are interested in a very slightly used one let me know.

My Princeton is of the 10" variety. I installed the Cannibus Rex which tamed the ice pick nature of the Celestion Gold that came with it. As a "good pedal platform" I run a tweed-flavored pedal in front (True North Tweed Deluxe). That, combined with the early breakup, make a pretty tasty pairing.

The Black Betty clip I posted was that set-up (Eastman 335 guitar, the tweed peal and a delay) recorded with a Sure SM57. No touch-ups in post.

If I were to talk you out of it I'd say that it's clean tone is delicious, but the breakup is underwhelming.

I'll try the talk you out of it, option.

I'ld rather buy another 1963 Gibson Falcon 19RVT, like I have, at half the price of that 1400$ fender.

You see these around for 600-800$. They do need one tone sucking resistor/circuit cut out of them to sound at their best. But its a somewhat common operation. Gibson marketing then thought country music was the hot market, so they added a bass sucking circuit to their pre-existing Tweed cab design. Mine was already fixed when I bought it. Lovely amp with great reverb and tremolo.

The Superchamp is a better amp than the Princeton. The tube circuits (& speaker) are virtually identical between the SCXD & the Princeton.
You'll be much better satisfied with a DRRI than a Princeton, but the SCXD is better than the DRRI too.

Great comments!! I put the Supro on the block this morning for the same coin I paid for it used. I got a great deal on it and I do believe it will sell quickly this time of year. Of course that does not come close to paying for the $1400 Princeton. Not sure I will end up with a Princeton or not. @uwmcscott if I decide the Princeton is the way to go, we'll talk. There is a tweed Blues Jr in the rehearsal space that does the same thing to my ear and it would be much cheaper. The Supro needed to go either way, so all the GAS at least prompted me to post it for sale.
