Amp works but no sound ** Edit ** Sent it back

Thank you all so much for your insight(s). A few of them might have worked but I sent it back the next day and got a refund. I would have accepted another amp, but that was their last one.

I really dug the Blackstar (EL34 version) but I went a different route and ordered the Quilter Labs UK Superblock and a cab (to be reviewed soon).

Help.

New amp.
- Working great yesterday. Not being pushed at all.
- Today I can hear the hiss of the speaker and the electric "click" when I plug it in.
- But no sound through a cord. At all.

I've tried
- Different cords (going direct in)
- Different instruments
- Ensuring that the speaker is plugged into the chassis.
- A spritz of contact cleaner in the input jack
- Toggling the standby switch back and forth.

I dunno. It's a new Blackstar Studio 10 and was working fine yesterday.

Before someone who knows what they are talking about chimes in....
I would try alligator clipping the speaker to another source to make sure that the speaker does speak.
Then I would replace or bypass to existing 1/4 input plug.

Does it put any output through the headphone/emulated out?

Try wiggle or only partially / mostly insert the plug while making noise with guitar strings.
swap preamp tube.

If it's NEW new, I would say time to use the warranty. If not, and it's a tube amp, tubes. Can you see all the tubes? Are they all lit up?

All good advice no the prior posts.

Hearing hiss, means the final amp stage and speaker work. If you rotate the volume and tone knobs and the hiss is altered, that means the pre-amp section works as well.

Which leaves the input jack, which could be broken solder or it's solder eyelet lifting and breaking from the PCB. I'd exchange it, if that is possible.

Turn up the guitar volume, turn off the muting tuner pedal. I lost count of how many times I have debugged problems ultimately solved by those not so brilliant remedies. Not applicable here, but the other stupid human trick I have pulled more than once is to leave the (tube) amp in standby and then debug every other part of the signal path wondering why there was no sound despite the glowing power light.

What everyone else has said. Plus...

It's got an effects loop. The Send and Return jacks are probably shorting jacks that conduct signal when there's nothing plugged into the loop. If the jacks don't short properly, no signal passes. Squirt a small amount of contact cleaner into each one and plug/unplug a 1/4" plug in each one several times. If you don't get sound, plug a guitar cable between Send and Return to jumper the loop. If you don't get sound, talk to the vendor you got it from.

BTW: Which Studio 10 do you have? There are 3 versions.

You don't know how many 100's of amps I repaired in the 90's, that we simple that! Luckily for the owners, I inspected their amps for other things, cleaning everything while I had it, because my minimum bench fee was $25 and most music stores were adding $10 on top of my charge.

Did you ever get this sorted?

Off topic question, but how do you change the title of your thread after it's been published? There have been times I've wanted to do that, but I couldn't find any way to edit it.

Go to the first post and click on the pencil icon to edit it.
Select the "Full Editor" option (at the bottom of the screen)
Now you can change the subject of the thread if you wish.
Not difficult really.

@tlarson58 returning it was most probably the best thing for you to do. Sorry you had the trouble nothing worse than new gear crapping out.

Thanks... You're right, it's not difficult, but it's not intuitive, either. :) I would have never thought to edit the opening post in order to change the title of the thread.

Dunno about the "not intuitive" because the first post is where the title gets created, so it just seems logical (to me) that is where you should be able to edit it. :D

Being a mod, I wouldn't expect you to have to use much intuition, but I was looking for something like the "thread tools" option on the old forum. If it were under the "settings" options (gear icon at the top of the page), that would make more sense to me.
