Work with a guy (sold me a gorgeous Larrivee acoustic last year) that had recently purchased a Gretsch Boxcar resonator. Turns out that he loved it. Like a lot. He's in love with the idea of a resonator completely now. So much in love that he decided to get himself a pretty high end National. I forget the model name - but it's amazing.

Anyway, point is he's a one in one out kind of guy - so he offered me a smoking deal on his not-very-old Gretsch. The sort of deal that had me nearly break a finger fishing for my wallet before some other S.O.B. snatch the guitar before I could.

Behold, my $70 Gretsch Boxcar.

I'll be the first to admit that I've never been much for slide-playing. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE it, but I've always sucked at it. Turns out you just need the right set up with the right strings and everything gets a lot easier. Nobody will ever mistake me for a true blues-man, but I'm honestly surprised with how much I'm enjoying it.

Way cool! I have always wished I could play slide worth a flip but I never put the time in. Sounds like you are putting the time in and are on your way. Congrats on the smoking deal! Good to see you around too. I have started to hang more often.

Honestly the slide end of things seems to be the easiest part - it's the rhythm AND the slide working together that presents the issues for me.

At first I was having trouble with the slide until I got a small glass slide. This sounds weird, but I was able to "feel" the strings with the glass slide better. It's way lighter than a metal slide and doesn't give the same tone - but as a learning tool it was invaluable. Now the metal slides are just as easy. I'm still not any good, but I'm not bottoming the strings out anymore, either.

Wow! Is the 1 in 1 out rule mean he has to give the old one away? Hang out with that guy and keep encouraging him to upgrade πŸ˜€
Actually I lucked out on my reso. It was a $50 wall hanging decoration that actually worked. But mine was a low end Johnson.

Those look cool. I have a few slides and found I like glass too. Iirc metal or brass on acoustic was OK enough but hated it on electric.
Ceramic may be good too but I only have a too small pinky slide as a trial.
